Hi guys,
The latest supplement for the Conan RPG is due out this week - 200 pages of hardback goodness entitled Aquilonia: Flower of the West!
Aquilonia is one of the central nations of Hyboria and veteran Conan writer Vincent Darlage has once again done us proud by rising to the occasion. He kicks off with a look at the general society and peoples of this great nation, studying the importance of marriage, poperty ownership and slavery, as well as common occupations, trade, economy and social standings.
A Breed Apart introduces various Aquilonian sub-races, such as the Attalusians, Bossonians and Gundermen, reflecting on the positions they normally hold in the country as well as the game effects of playing such characters. This follows on to Might & Majesty, a detailed treatise on the Aquilonian military, from the life of the common soldier (and a good place for a new Conan campaign to start) to specific units such as the Black Legion.
Pomp & Pagentry brings Aquilonia to life, covering various social activities common in the country, such as fairs, festivals and contests - there is a great deal to involve players here as there are seven different disciplines involved in a normal archery contest and similar variations are available for bear baiting, battleball and many others to form huge tournaments that players can lose themselves within.
Illnesses & Ungents is a short chapter detailing medicine and health in Aquilonia and this tails quickly into Faith & Fervour, a study of religion. From Asura to Mitra, players can select the gods they pray to and perhaps even join the clergy that surrounds each faith.
Governance & Law delves into the politics of Aquilonia which no doubt the players will soon run head to head with. The feudal government is studied (along with details on how players can integrate themselves into the possibility of land and power), along with law and taxation. The major characters of Aquilonia can be found here too, such as King Conan, Zenobia, Radegund and Prospero.
An expanded Aquilonian gazetteer can be found in Beyond the Gardens, which takes the information found in the Road of Kings supplement and super details it to an incredible degree. From small towns to the largest cities, a Games Master will never be found wanting, and this chapter is complemented beautifully by the maps on the inside covers of this book.
The last chapters of the book focus on more rule-oriented matters. Ways & Means provides new feats unique to those from Aquilonian society, such as Drive Your Enemy, Master Tracker and Rider's Leap. Lords & Masters provide prestige classes specific to Aquiloina - the Gunderland Mercenary, Gunderland Pikeman, and Poitainian Knight. As with most prestige classes in the Conan RPG, these generally entail actually signing up to an organisation rather than just picking up some nifty skills and abilities. . .
Foes & Fiends is an Aquilonian bestiary, with such beasts as the Hydragon, Lotus-Thing and Wind Ghosts. Serfs & Sell-Swords, on the other hand, provide more human foes for your players to lock weapons with. From Bandits and Healers to Poitainian Knights and Westermarck Soldiers, there are a variety of characters to populate your scenarios with and all are provided at multiple levels of advancement, allowing you to pick exactly the right character for your game.
The last two chapters cover Games Mastering scenarios in Aquilonia, with hints, tips and guides for the GM in portraying the nation's unique atmosphere, new codes of honour and themes that will be easy to integrate into any on going campaign.
Aquilonia: Flower of the West is priced at $34.95 and will be appearing this week in your local games stores and book shops.
