How's this for coolness...

Taken from Newsarama.com:

"Dark Horse Comics President Mike Richardson announced today a new publishing program featuring the classic Robert E. Howard creation Conan the Barbarian. DHC’s new monthly ongoing series will include all new stories based on the character and also incorporate adaptations of Howard’s original Conan tales.

"I am very honored and excited to bring this classic character back to the comics world," commented Richardson. "We will be working closely with Fredrik Malmberg of Conan properties to ensure the highest quality stories and art to do this legendary character justice."

According to Dark Horse, “First introduced as ‘Conan the Cimmerian’ in the 1930's, Howard's character quickly garnered an enormous following the world over. Over the past 70 years the barbarian hero has been brought to life in books, comics, television, and film. Recently rumored to be in the works is a new Conan feature film!”

"Conan has been a major comics franchise for many years," Fredrik Malmberg remarked. "Dark Horse was our number one choice when we looked for a new licensee and we are extremely pleased with the creative approach they are planning."

The Dark Horse Conan series is scheduled to launch mid 2003 and we’ll have more creative details when they’re available.

A spokesperson for Dark Horse also confirmed they are working with the Swedish Company Paradox Entertainment, who in September announced the purchase of 20% of the Conan Sales Company, the corporation which holds all right to Conan, with the option to purchase all remaining stock. The agreement gives Paradox the management of the Conan property. Newsarama’s original story on that deal follows.

Originally published in October 2002:

It's been a little around two years since Conan graced the pages of comics, and by Crom, he may just be coming back soon. In a deal made public September 26th, a Swedish company, Paradox Entertainment, bought 20% of the Conan Sales Company, the corporation that holds all right to Conan. The particular agreement between Paradox and CSC both gives the management of the Conan property to the Swedish company and allows Paradox the option to purchase all remaining stock in CSC as well, effectively owning the Conan property outright.

As a company, Paradox labels itself as a publisher, created to build science fiction, fantasy and alternative history brands in cross-media platforms. Its brands to date include Mutant Chronicles, Europa Unversalis, Kult, Heavy Gear, Hearts of Iron, and Crusader Kings.

Returning Conan to comics is something that tops the list of Paradox CEO, Theodore Bergquist. "Comics are obviously something we want to see Conan return to," Bergquist told Newsarama. "Since the property has its roots in publishing and pulps, that's an important channel for us to work in. Marvel worked with Conan for over 20 years, and it was their best-selling comic for years. This isn't something that we'll put on ice - seeing Conan return to comics is important for the property."

While Bergquist declined to go into specifics, he said that there was tremendous interest in Conan as a comic book property, but did not say if an announcement of a publishing plan was imminent.

According to Bergquist, the time is ripe for a return of Conan to all forms of media, and the head of Paradox cited the Warner Brothers option for a third Conan film, as well as the TDK license that allows the company to make cross-platform videogames starring the character, and the ongoing publishing plan with TOR books.

"We've got two major challenges: The first is to be true to the great Conan fan base, and the second is to elevate the Conan brand and its characters preparing the property for another sixty years in the entertainment industry," Bergquist said. "We feel that Paradox is well suited to take on such tasks."

Marvel's last Conan comic was released in 2000, and reportedly, the comic license reverted back to CSC at the time. According to comments made by Marvel's Editor in Chief Joe Quesada concerning the publishing rights to similar characters, the rights to publish Conan comics may have been lost in the shuffle during the publisher's bankruptcy years.

More recently, Cross Plains Comics acquired the comic rights to virtually the entire Robert E. Howard library of characters except Conan, with publisher Richard Ashford looking to acquire Conan if he could. Cross Plains couldn't get its footing in the market, and folded in 2000. "

BW-S was great, but I grew up with the Buscema/Chan Conan. I think it's a shame that Conan hasn't been in comics for so long. Marvel's Conan was one of my favorite comics for years (along with Marvel Two-In-One, featuring the Thing). It'd be great to see a revival.

Ahh... the Buscema/Chan Conan brings back some fond memories. Buscema's pencils were some of the best artwork comics have ever seen. Conan's body truly MOVED in those panels.

Remember Savage Sword of Conan, the old black and white magazine? When I was in my early teens, an old bookstore (now defunct) in my hometown used to sell back issues out of a tattered old cardboard box for 75 cents or a dollar. I used to buy them two or three at a time each week with my allowance money and just get lost reading them. Best damned deal ever. I still have them all, too and I'll never get rid of them.

Yeah. Whilst my fave was the Thomas/Buscema run, I also loved the BWS stuff. And given Buscema has passed on, thats why I mentioned BWS and remembered how Barry snd his work 'Storyteller' was treated by DHC.

That was THE BEST. I couldnt stand the later colour normal comics. I really wish Marvel could release a collected edition of Savage Sword. Sadly thats never likely to happen.

I remember Savage Sword. Heck, I'm old enough to remember seing them on the newsstands new. SS was tough for me to find on a regular basis, and, I have to admit, I far preferred the color comics anyway. Still, now, I would love to see SS make a comeback, maybe even in full color, along the lines of something like Heavy Metal.

I'm feeling a huge wave of nostalgia here. Heck, anyone remember when Conan met Elric? lol!

I probably won't be buying the comic. My regular series collecting days are two closets behind me but I'll probably buy the trade paperbacks.
