Bigger than the Death Star? ;)
Makes the Death Star look like a ping-pong ball with a firecracker stuck in it.

Okay, maybe that's stretching things a bit, but it is really well done.

Compare that to say GR's attempts with Black Company and/or Thieves World?
I've never seen BCCS and I've only skimmed Thieves World, so I'm afraid I can't offer much in the comparison shopping department. :(

Shaman,

My second question was directed at Tur, but thanks for trying!

In any case thanks also for trying the comparision!

I'm not as impressed as Turjan by the Conan RPG. I don't think it's great, but it's a decent rulebook, and the background part and magic feel are both very well done compared to the writings of Howard, in feel at least, as far as Magic is concerned.

If you want to run a Conan game, you might want to check out GURPS too. There is a GURPS Conan sourcebook that much people who have read it rave about.

Running a Conan game using Iron Heroes would be a blast too. Haven't tried it, but I would like to, with Aquilonian characters or something.

Oh, was it?

Unfortunately, my answer is similar to that of the Shaman. I have not the slightest idea what the "Black Company" actually is (not the GR book, but the original) and thusly was not interested in the book. As for Thieves' World, I didn't like the book very much upon skimming (e.g., I hate town maps that make a city look like a hamlet in the swamps); as I already had Conan, I didn't feel the need for yet another low magic ruleset.

Compare Conan RPG with Thieves' World? That's comparing two very different things. One (Conan RPG) is an actual OGL game, with all the rules you're ever going to need (well, I mean besides the Conan supplements. If you go for Conan OGL, you ought to get Scrolls of Skelos too, for instance), while the other tweaks but uses the Core Rules of D&D (Thieves' World).

I'd prefer Thieves' World though, personally. Just because I'm a bit tired to have to learn all the changes to the OGL all over again with every single OGL game out there and switch campaigns each time I do so. Right now, I much prefer D&D compatible game materials, like TW, Arcana Evolved or Ptolus. The more compatible the better, actually.

Admittedly, it was in part hyperbole in order to meet Nightfall's expectations of getting inspired ;). In principle, it's one stepping stone on the way to a good low magic ruleset. The rules are already better than in Slaine. In the end, Iron Heroes isn't without warts, either.

Tur,

Theives Guild? *sighs* Some people need to be edified...

Od,

Thank you for that insight Od. I read the books (both Black Company and Thieves World), so I was interested to see how they turned out. I was impressed. Now that you say OGL...well not adverse to it but it does make me...wary. Thanks for the advice.

Okay, it's edited. I told you that I don't have the book :).

Odhanan is right. For a Conan game, I'd get at least the Atlantean Edition of the core book, the Scrolls of Skelos and, for flavor, The Road of Kings.

Tur,

You should really get the books. They are great. Just ask Crothy. But you are right, Iron Heroes has some warts to it. Just not as many as some other games.
