Iron Chef, THANKS for the wonderful job you're doing!!!

Mongoose people should reward you, as you support the game almost more than them :)

Please pass this along to Mongoose, so I can await my first check. ;)

As a playtester for the Conan RPG I can tell you that the damage reduction system does not make combat a nightmare. Like any thing thats new you have to work a bit to learn it. Combat in this game takes about the same time as in D+D.

I LOVE this book, however we will be D&Dizing the entire combat system. As playtesters ourselves, we simply didn't like the new dual-AC combat system. Of course, playtesting had even more mechanics that never made it to the final version. Now, the only thing different about it, really, is the two types of AC and the armor damage. It's cool, but just not my group's style. It's easy enough to house rule and doesn't affect the game one iota.

I run the fastest combat games of anyone in Colorado (ask anyone) and we found that the system, although accurate, had increased math and we like to 'think less. :) It was also somewhat slower at our 10+ level games. Once we learned HOW to play the system it was about equal, however we still prefer the D&D combats.

Using d20 in this world has been AWESOME. I'll have some house rules for you guys shortly if you want to try them out.

Iron Chef. Way to go on the campaign stuff!

You're welcome! :D

I hope others will be able to use it to get their Conan games off and running quickly, since there is no starter adventure included in the book. Anyone who uses it should post feedback for me (either here or in the thread at Mongoose's Conan forum). I'm curious to know what worked and what didn't. At least, now nobody has the excuse that it's "too much work" to get a Conan campaign started right out of the box... I've already done practically every stitch of work for you, and there's enough info to generate 3-6 gaming sessions, bringing characters to 3rd or 4th level, with enough wiggle room for the GM to add in side treks and subplots as desired to stretch things out even further. Enjoy, and feel free to ask me any questions about my free "instant campaign", my "femme fatale" class, or the Conan RPG in general.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of people posting to this thread. :(
I know the game is new, but I'm not seeing a lot of ENWorlders saying they've bought the book or are planning to, yet Mongoose says over half the print run is sold out. Is it the $50 price tag scaring people here off? Is it that the game is OGL and has some important differences from D&D? So many ENWorlders have been requesting gritty fantasy/low magic rules and settings that it seems strange to me that "Conan The RPG" is getting so little interest on ENWorld. Is it just me? Not grumbling, just curious.

I like Conan, and think the gamebook was relatively well done, but I'm mostly a lurker so I don't post much. To tell you the truth, as much as I love Conan, I'm not surprised there isn't more buzz (if that perception is correct); Conan hasn't had a mag or comic for years. Dark Horse is starting up the franchise again, and I'm looking forward to it, but I think Conan and REH aficionados have always been a "relatively" small group. The only thing most of my RPG'ing friends know about Conan is from the two mediocre movies...

I bought the book sight unseen in spite of my concerns about Mongoose. Given the amount of time it will likely take before I can generate enough enthusiasm to get others to play it, I'd wish I'd waited for a later edition. The content is top drawer, full of awesome material true the the genre and to REH. The proof-reading was once again done by Mongoose's staff of drunken adolescent monkeys. (sigh)

Thanks for delurking! :)

The proofreading was poor, as usual for Mongoose, AEG and many other RPG publishers. We are (slowly) getting official errata for the game from Mongoose and have a thread of found errors going on on the Mongoose Conan forum. Hopefully, an official errata pdf will be released soon. None of the goofs ruin the game, and most can be common sensed into shape easily or even outright dismissed as d20 SRD "cut and paste" leftovers.

The Mongoose Conan forum has fast, friendly help for you, as well as exciting new ideas and variant rules from the fans. Mongoose has been very good at providing new free download support material, particularly various character sheets, a corrected (if still not completely accurate, but close enough) map, and fantastic NPC tables.

BTW: There are three free Hyborian Age maps (including the Mongoose one), each slightly different, with varying levels of detail, located at Scarlet-Blades.
http://scarlet-blades.com/ I prefer the third one, which is the most detailed, showing tons of cities and ruins not on the Mongoose map. The Mongoose one, however, is clean, beautifuly colored and color codes the terrain features (mountains, deserts, plains/steppes, etc.)---something the other maps completely fail to do.
