Of course. Take note that they came from being extremely rare to be almost a common occurance in the D&D of nowadays. If this enemy is extremely rare, it is normal that it has some advantages others do not have. Superior infravision, Magic resistance, Poison resistance, Magic items, Fey Resistance (they were... are elves after all.) and they even had innate spells they could cast. As soon as they became common player race, their power dropped accordingly (and the fearful respect players had for them too).
