Confessions of a full time Wizard confession

This is a surprising de-evolution of this thread. I was expecting more guesses at what the new class might be, and less writer bashing, which kind of comes off as sexist. I don't have a special appreciation for Sally's writing, but someone must like it, because she is getting paid for it.

Riiiight. Speak critical of her, and its sexist.

I hate it. It comes off as someone trying TOO HARD to be funny and witty, instead of actually being funny and witty.

I hate to say it, but sometimes it comes off as airhead.

I agree more women in teh hoby is nice, I know more than a few, and they are feminine when they want to be. But its nothing like this.

*shrug* to each their own, as you say.

This.

Shelly's a good writer, but the manner in which she writes about D&D is essentially an attempt to relate the game back in "girly-girl" terms. In doing so, she really comes across as being an airhead. When the best way she can describe her character going into town to pick up supplies and gear is that she's "going to the mall," then it's hard not to think of her as having just stepped off the set of Clueless.

For a much better review of her writing, from what I think of as a much cooler gamer girl, check out Geek's Dream Girl's review of Confessions of a Part-Time Sorceress.

Awww, thanks for the love!

Shelly is a good writer, but I agree with you, carmachu, sometimes it does smell of trying too hard. The airhead thing is what makes me want to smack her silly. No girl I know is going to want to play D&D because she can think of the local town shops as "the mall" or roleplay running in stilettos.

I see what WotC is trying to do by having Shelly in the spotlight, but I worry she's going to be a cartoon-y presence that nobody takes seriously.

By the way, Silverblade, the Jibober reference made me laugh. I was an EverCrack addict for several years. I had a bard, tho. My favorite part of having a bard with an epic weapon? The fact that nobody ever fixed the fact that when you played a Wind song while holding the epic, you stabbed yourself in the head repeatedly and danced. :-)

My bad on the name, call it a little case of dyslexia/reading way too fast for my own good.

And I wasn't criticizing the crtitcism itself for being kindof sexist, it was the way it was worded.

This is the first full article of SHELLY's I've read, so I didn't quite have any context. If she does dexcribe getting gear in town as going to the mall, then WotC has the same problem as the video game companies had earlier this decade: trying to get female gamers by putting pink things in games, instead of using mechanics and storytelling to garner gamers, you know, the things that count and make people life-long gamers.

EDIT: I'm suddenly reminded of my university classes where we went over how motivations and gender, and how, in general, they aren't really different depending on the person's sex, just the way they are brought up/their brain is wired.

2nd EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to put in another class speculation. I'm gonna keep doing this until someone comments on them. Divine leader who carries a little chip/quasi-deity on his/her shoulder. This quasi-deity can then fly around the battlefield, giving boosts to allies and smiting enemies with its tiny will. Occasionally it just explodes as well. The class will have a lot of zone powers, all centered on the quasi-deity.

It's not really described as a 'pet', though. It's described as a 'buddy', and the references to 'personal trainer' might be describing the pet (it's ambiguous, though--could also be referring to the class itself).

My guess, based on fleeting references to 'patron' in Races & Classes, is the Bard.

Ok lets try to answer what the original post was after i think it is going to be a shaman summoning spirits from the land, the first one I imagine to be a will-o'-the-wisp esque undefined shape forest spirit which can do healing through a healing word esque ability further powers my give it more abilities, I also predict ability to summon different totem spirits for different flavoured powers and the ability to be aligned with one of the 3 options as a class feature 3 options being

willo the wisp - healing, reflex attack
Wolf - damage focused, can be used to flank with
Bear - Defending powers, like the wizards shield utility

The specialisation will give extra benefits to some powers.

In regards to the actual article, this was probably her most readable one yet, but that isn't saying much, she seems to be the type of roleplayer who would annoy me, the kind who focus' on one old Character and will attempt to bring it into discussion all the time (I have no problem with people talking about old characters in general) and frequently playing carbon copies of it (the character infact being a ideal representation of themself)
Apologies to the Lady if this untrue but its how it comes over to me.

Having said this I will read the next article to see what her DM'ing is like, and to see what her players think about it and her plot.
