Ok, Its been a while

A Player wants to be a Minotaur.
6HD creature
+2 Level Adjustment
Fighter 1st level
--------------------------------
Other players are standard Phb Races
All 7th level
--------------------------------
Other player thinks that per Dmg
that his Minotaur is 7th Level but effectively needs exp equal to; 9th level
too become an 8th level character or if you will 6th level Bull/2nd level Fighter
--------------------------------
Am I going mental, does that seem right
I need a ruling, i am at work and he emailed him to me, we are playing tonight
and i have none of my books on me.

thanks a bunch

That would be an level 9 character, by the rules, not 7.

However, racial hit dice aren't worth much at all. In terms of the actual power he has...level 7 might not be too far off.

I agree that it's 9 by the rules.

Racial HD aren't worth a level each, but LA is based on racial HD. That is, reducing the minotaur to 1 HD would make it much too powerful for PC use at LA +2.

It's a screwy system. The minotaur isn't too bad; I rate a minotaur Ftr1 at ECL 9, just as the book does. Some of their breakdowns are bad, though...

yes it is a weird system

it like an old game of mine where my npc was a CN Gargoyle ordered to venture with the groups Wizard by her father too watch out for her.

But what is funny about it is, yes it gets a hellish CON and DR 10/magic and such, but when the party was 4th level and it was ECL 9th (4HD+5 LA)
the party was already more powerful.

I think not that a gargoyle is anywhere near the power of a 9th level character.

Neither a do i think that a minotaur is any more powerful that a 6th level Fighter if made right.

Thanks for the help, I think i am going to let him go with what he feels is right, so how it works out and rule on it later.

What? A minotaur has the same BA as a human Ftr6, but with a +8 Str and +4 Con, it's a little hard to see how this could be so... even ignoring their flat-foot immunity, senses (darkvision and scent), powerful charge, and skill bonuses.

What I mean a 6th level Fighter going toe to toe with a base Minotaur is just as or can be more powerful.
The amount of feats and Equipment

I have had Monks, Fighters and Barbarians all have there way with a Minotaur.
Its just how they are made and the tactics they use is all.
Think about it, Minotaurs are generaly all the same at there base, but if skilled and done right most characters of equivlent HD in levels could go toe to toe with one and walk away, bloody yes, but walk away.

Oh sure, with a base minotaur. That's not nearly the same as a PC minotaur, though...
