Constitution rating and allergies

As I sit here all a'sniffle once more, I wonder...

Is a susceptibility to annual allergies (pollen, mold) reflected in a character's constitution score?

Doubtfully - and in truth it shouldn't be - allergies can strike anyone, no matter how healthy otherwise, at any time - it's not a disease or parasite, and in truth it's caused by an OVERREACTION of your immune system, not a failure of it.

Yeah a high con doesn't mean one is less likely to have allergies. I get seasonal allergies and I'm otherwise pretty darned healthy, tough and heal quickly. I had a broken leg for 3 days before i knew i'd broken it, i just thought I bruised it really badly after i decided to jump up in the air and land with my shin on the edge of the snow shovel.

In that case, I've got a frippin' Con of 21 this week.
I hate the first days of spring. (mumble mumble...)

Damn, Paul Bunyan, that had to hurt, with or without walking on it! :)

Yeah, I'm a Claritin-junkie myself the past week... But healthy or no, allergies will strike. Unless I am misinformed, doctors know the HOW of allergies, but they still don't know the "why" of it. They know you're technically not allergic until the second season after you are exposed, and the second time is when the histamine production kicks in.

Anyway, too far afield of the original. Let's make some game rules, like:

Roll a d10 for the spring months of your campaign year; keep note of this result. Then, roll a d10 for the second year. If the two numbers come up identical in two consecutive years, you are allergic to an outdoor substance. When outdoors, the character acts as if they had the sickened condition, but does not stack with the sickened condition. Keep note of each year's successive rolls, as if the next two rolls come up identical, the character is no longer allergic to said substance.

If an opponent throws a concentrated amount of the substance on the character with a ranged touch attack, the character acts as if nauseated until they clean themselves with water or strip of all affected clothing.

A 0-level spell, Benedriel's Succor, will relieve the condition for 4 hours duration.
The 2nd level spell, Clariton's Call, will relieve the condition for 1 day.

Anyone else want to take a shot?

While perhaps not exactly on topic, some of the whys are slowly becoming apparent.

When you are young, your immune system gets "trained", or exercized. Early exposures teach your body what to react to, and what to ignore. Children with remarkably low exposure to allergens tend to have more allergies. Kids who have pets in the house when young have a lower incidence of allergies (of all types) later in life.

So much for our super-clean, spic-and-span, disinfect everything world. Apparently, the human system needs to be exposed to good old fashoined dirt in order to function properly :)

A-HA! I knew having all those cats and dogs would pay off! :)

Interestingly enough, the past few years, my allergies, though present, are not nearly as bad as they used to be earlier in life. Years ago before I got married and my wife started our puppy collection, I couldn't leave my house without taking benadryl 24-7, or getting a claritin prescription. Nowadays, I take Claritin, but even if I miss a few doses, it doesn't paralyze me like it used to.

Well, anyone else have a batter mechanic for allergies in-game, or at least better puns? :)

Well it sure hurt and the bruise wasn't going down that is why i went to the dr, imagine how surpised i was. It still hurts when i think about it.

This is one of these areas where D&D physics/biology doesn't match the real world. Immune systems well adapted to earlier, less sanitary times are more likely to have allergic reactions than those adapted to the antiseptic modern world. So, real world Con and allergies would either have no correlation or a direct correlation. However, in D&D constitution means health. Full stop. Therefore, allergies and Con should inversely correlate.
