[Contest, ENPub] Elements of Magic review contest - now over

Thanee, my email addy is RangerWickett at hotmail. Email me, and I'll have Russ send you a comp copy.

Wow, a lot to answer.

First of all, the most important issue, is credit. Matt Blakeley and I brainstormed some of the early revisions last summer, but real-life concerns kept him unable to write. We eventually worked out that he wouldn't be able to devote any sizeable time to the book, and so I did pretty much all of the writing. I included him among the playtesters, but he hasn't been active since December or so. Please don't think I'm trying to steal the glory from Matt; he's just got a family to take care of, and didn't actually write anything that made it into the final book.

Second, yeah, the title was supposed to imply that this was an all new version. We thought EOM2 would imply this would be an add-on to the first book, whereas 'revised' would suggest that it was new and improved. I suppose we could've used The Real Elements of Magic, like The Real Ghostbusters. *grin*

Because it is such a significant revision that it is practically a new book, we won't be providing free copies or discounts. However, everyone is welcome to download the .doc file rules on the E.N. Publishing website. The link is on the right side of the page.

Rulemaster, thanks for pointing out the mistake in the info text.

And finally, regarding freaky boobies. . . . Well, Russ did joke that the cover image looked more like we were doing a book on "a magic-wielding nymphette species." *nervous embarrassment* Hopefully it's not too disturbing.

There has been some frustration on the part of people who bought the original EOM who read that we'd be providing a free update. I'll point you toward the publisher forum thread here so that this thread doesn't get shipped off there too, but the short of it is that such promises were made when we expected this 'book' to be about 10 pages long and just have 3.5 updates. When we decided to make it a more sizeable change, we thought the best way to make up for earlier claims would be to provide a rather large teaser as a free download on the E.N. Publishing site. At 40 pages, it's sizeably more material than a simple 3.5 revision would've been.

Now, to get back to your regularly scheduled thread, I hope people will enjoy the book and the contest.

We have our first review:

http://www.enworld.org/reviews/index.php?sub=yes&where=active&reviewer=anondragon&product=EoMRE

Anondragon, if you see this, you have won a free copy of Lyceian Arcana when it comes out in a month-ish. With the email feature down, it'd be easiest if you could post your email address here for future reference. If you sent me an email, I'm afraid I might lose it in the interim.

Thanks for the comments.

RangerWickett,

my email address is bradshaw at cs dot umass dot edu

what do I need to do to contribute to LA?

Thanks

Just posted a review of Elements of Magic here .

As I've been reading through the book, I've caught many typos, ambiguouties, or slight errors in the book and I was wondering if you would mind me posting them so they could be fixed.

Thanks,
Pugio

Here is my review

I was immediatly turned off objectification of women on the front cover and never bothered to try and get because of cover art.

Other than that it was fine.

I'm sorry that you felt women were being objectified by the cover, Kamosa. There is a certain goofiness factor to the illustration, I admit, but the female elemental spirits on the cover aren't presented as some sort of object of desire. They are nude, but in the same classical sense that fey and many feminine mythological spirits are nude. There's no sex on the cover, and the rather cartoonish nature of the characters possesses far less titilation than the Phil & Dixie comics seen in the back of Dragon for years. Kamosa, I understand your reaction, but I think it's a little extreme, given that the cover is not presented as sexual image, just an interpretation of the classical connection between magic and the feminine.

Oh, and this doesn't count as a review, so no sequel for you. *wink*

Sure, post them, but do it on a thread on the EN Publishing forum. I'd hoped there weren't many typos or errors, but apparently there are a few ambiguouties that go with the new rules, judging from the threads and questions already posted.

I think we've generally had a track record of few glaring errors in the past, but half our staff members were unavailable for the release of this book, so we had fewer proofreads than usual. Ah well. Thanks for pointing 'em out, though.
