Contingency

Contingency says that you can only use it in conjunction with spells that are cast on yourself.

So would it be legal to set up a Contingency to cast Dispel Magic on me if I am controlled or dominated in some way? Since the target of the Dispel Magic would be me, could it work?

This would also possibly Dispel all of the spells on me, not only the Charm/Domination.

Thoughts?

Yes, this is legal.

Any spell which has an option of a single creature target can be set up with Contingency.

The problem with the Targeted Dispel Magic is that it will automatically dispel all buff spells that you put on yourself.

So, this Contingency can actually cause more harm than good.

One other note. When you get to 18th level, make the Contingency a Greater Dispelling (even if the character is a Sorcerer, buy the spell on a scroll if you do not have it).

Thanks Crothian. I thought it was a pretty cool idea myself. :D

KarinsDad, couldn't I make Caster Level checks against all of my buffs, in the hope that I fail and don't dispel them?

"you may choose to automatically..."

So the Dispel won't automatically get all your own buffs unless you so choose.

Would it not be easier (and simpler) to have contingency to cast protection from evil on you, since that is *guaranteed* to block attempts to dominate or mentally control you? You can then use your sane and uncontrolled condition to dispel any particular effects you don't like.

Cheers

Sure it blocks attempts. But would it stop an already on-going domination?

No, but it would prevent its use: the link still exists, so if protection from evil runs out, control can be excercised.

Hence my suggestion that when the pro/evil snaps on, the wizard quickly dispels the dominating magic :)

Yes, but although Protection From Evil prevents domination while in effect, it does nothing against Charm.

Where did you get this quote from?

The quote from Dispel Magic is:

"You automatically succeed at your dispel check against any spell that you cast yourself."

That does not sound like a choice to me.
