Controlling oozes?

Given that there are already several ways to control oozes, why not just create a charm monster variant a level higher that allows control of oozes, but nothing else? Otherwise, player characters will be the only ones in the gaming universe without the option of controlling oozes at all.

Well, because the PCs would acquire it once they kill this particular BBEG. That's not something I'd really be comfortable with them having. :)

That, and by a strict reading, "dominate monster" won't work on oozes, even though the item description doesn't specifically state otherwise.
You could always state that the encounter occurs towards the end of the Rod's 500 minute control limit...that way, there's little harm in the PC's acquiring the item - all they can do is sell the parts for scrap, as it were. :)

Necromancer games has some ooze-oriented classes, magic items, and abilities in Jim Collura module "Chaos Rising" and IIRC some of these were reprinted later in other books (perhaps in Tome of Horrors 2??). The stuff was interesting, fun, inspirational: worth checking out.

Also, you may want to consider the old AD&D drowic item wand of viscid blobs as part of this same genre/theme. Come to think of it, there may be some other blob/ooze stuff in Oerth Journal # 14 @ http://www.oerthjournal.com/oerthjournals/OJ_14.pdf (free), since it features the drowic city of Erelhei Cinlu.

The Jubilex Cleric idea is along the lines of what I instantly thought of: control of oozes by the Elder [i.e. Cthulhu etc.] Gods and their minions. Seems like a natural fit. 'Course why stop there...wouldn't many Chaotic Evil deities and demons have some sort of control over this kind of chaos, or at least doesn't it seem the case?
