a cheater..

i can kill a power gamer, drop an avalanche on a rules lawyer, and genearlly outsweve the meta gamer by casting silence on him.

You can't beat a cheater unless he's caught..

Two-Handed swords bolted together and wielded as giant scissors is munchkin. I read that one at the wizards boards. Based on a true story. :)

Technically, I consider a munchkin a powergamer. However, someone who actually cheats to powergame is even "more" munchkin!!

I voted cheater, but...

You can be a munchkin without TECHNICALLY cheating.

A munchkin is someone who uses everything at his disposal, whether it's cheating, metagaming, powergaming, or roleplaying, to "win" the game. By winning, what I mean is:

1> Dominating the DM's attention
2> Marginalizing the other PC's
3> Driving the plot, exclusively.

He tries to "own" the game.

I once knew someone who played OD&D and researched a "multifireball" spell that made one fireball per level, each dealing 1d6 damage per level.

But that's not the worst thing! I've known another who... well, he used 2e's psionics, as they were written in the book!! Gods, even I, who like to stick to the books as much as possible, had to change them.

Gnome hooked hammer in each hand for xtra attacks is munchkin.

Paladin asking if he can voluntarily become a ghost and keep his alignment and abilities is munchkin.

Ninja is munchkin.

I'm sick of the word "munchkin"!

Why does everyone always bash on powergaming? I mean, is there anything "wrong" with a playing the game at a high power level. I personally enjoy powergaming, I would rather play powerful characters capable of amazing feats, rather than perpetually weak characters. For this reason I have been called a "munchkin". Because I enjoy dungeon crawl rather than getting immersed in my character, I have been called a munchkin! It seems like this style of play has become associated with immature players, and "munchkins"!
Every since White Wolf came out with World of Darkness (or possibly before then) all I have been hearing about is role-playing, character immersion, and story-telling. Don't get me wrong, I like a good story as much as the next person, but I dislike it at the expense of elements that I consider fun (combat, dungeon crawls, having your character gain power). If you like deep immersion storytelling, and hate combat with a passion, that's fine but just respect the way I play and I'll respect yours. I just hate evangelical role-players. These players see it as their duty to "enlighten" powergamers so that they can "see the light" and start role-playing more. Every once in a while I see a thread on these boards asking members how to get players to role-play more, as if there was an inherent problem for not role-playing enough. All I'm saying is be careful throwing the "m-word" around, and try to respect people who play a different style of game.
