D&D 3E/3.5 Converting 3.5 Psionics to 5E?

They don't seem that great at being a caster. They get alot less points over a spellpoint caster.

Do they compare that well to a warlock for example.
Don't forget, they are able to generate additional points at higher levels. At 17th level, that is an additional 44 points which also allow them to stack concentration effects. That puts them only slightly behind casters but with the increased versatility of points vs. slots.

They get nearly identical Spell Points to a spell point caster, except their 6th-9th level spell slot points are locked up in what's currently a weird system.

If the Warlock gets 2 shorts and a long, then the Mystic's Spell Points compare well to the Warlock.

Mystic doesn't have anything like Eldritch blast though and the odd power looks decent but IDK if its enough to get excited over.

As I said I would have to see on in action, class looks fun though.

EB is an outlier compared to everything else. I still think it should have been a class ability, as it's so tied to the class.

I'd have liked to have seen the Disciplines each come with a paired talent that can be augmented with PP. Combining cantrip scaling and PP augmentation would give a nice scale for damage.

3.5 psionics were huge, like one really big (and good) book, with another splat book (not so good). Converting it to 5e, even half of it, is a massive undertaking.

The Mystic is definitely rough around the edges, but if you rule no multi-classing, and only use the lower levels, it's probably fine I'd personally just change Psionic Focus to only be changeable as part of a short rest (cuts out some abuse). I played a Mystic for a while (v2 and v3).

One alternate option is to simply tweak the 5e Sorcerer, to use DMG's Magic Points instead of spell slots, and call it Psionics (sorcery points basically become over-channeling, or whatever it was in 3.5). After all, the best description of how good 3.5 Psionics were, went like "this is how the Sorcerer should have been built!" By all means add a new sub-class if you want, but if you simply give the 5e Sorcerer more flexibility via spell points instead of slots, and say that maybe V becomes purely mental commands, hey presto, you've got Psionics!

Has anyone converted the Expanded Psionics Book from 3.5 to 5E?

I have not been impressed so far with the 5E Mystic and was thinking of doing a quick and dirty conversion of the book to 5E. Some basic thoughts.

Base 5E class modeled off- Sorcerer

2 archetypes initially- Psion, Psychic Warrior

ASI 4,8,12
Saves, Constitution, Intelligence

1d8 hit dice

PSP's equal to the spell points variant rule in DMG.

Psionic powers mostly treated like spells and duplicate the 5E equivalents. A 3.5 dominate person effect is identical to 5E dominate, polymorph= polymorph, shapechange= true polymorph etc. Saves convert to 5E directly, fort saves = con etc. Class abilities are similar to the warlock. Unique 3.5 powers translate as is unless they are clearly OP/broken in 5E rules (gaining concentration mechanic). Psionic attack modes become in effect cantrips.

Thoughts?

I'd rather do something crazier.

Create 6 feats - one for each of the 6 disciplines (psychometabolism, psychoportation, etc), each one tied to a different ability score as the 3.0 Psionics Handbook. Each feat would give you 2 or 3 powers and a number of power points equal to your ability modifier to use them, with the power points renewing on a short rest.

Something like that, anyway.

That would be quite a good system for adding in psionics with necessarily having a specific class. You could even create feat chains that allow greater mastery of a specific discipline.
