Converting old editions material to 5e

I noticed there is a sticky thread related to conversion legalities, but it's still related to converting to 3e.

I was thinking about writing a 5e conversion of some basic Rokugan material. I have 3e books by AEG, which is still the copyright holder.

Does anybody know what are the restrictions, rules, threats etc. I have to know, before I post my conversions on ENWorld?

The conversions I've seen so far are basically just conversation notes for adventures (not the whole adventure, which is a no no). People have been posting a few in the conversion forum as an attachment. At this point, it is pretty much shoot from the hip.

Perhaps someone can offer more guidance.

The 3e Rokugan books should be under the Open Game License - I'd take a look at how much of the books is open game content and see if that's enough for your purposes (if so, what you create will have to be under the Open Game License too). If not, can you draw inspiration from the books without copying or paraphrasing?

Looking at the Rokugan stuff in Oriental Adventures (not OGL, just happens to be on my desk), I think the Daidoji Bodyguard might make a good feat in 5E. Find a new name for it and draw inspiration from the abilities rather than copying them or rewording them, and bob's your uncle!

CRANE BODYGUARD
  • You can take an action to defend yourself, adding +4 to your AC until the beginning of your next turn. If you do so, from the beginning of your next turn you set your initiative to 20 + your initiative modifier.
  • You add +2 to your Armour Class if your attacker is wearing medium armour, and +4 if they are wearing heavy armour.
  • Once a day, if you are hit by an attack that would reduce you to 0 hit points or below, you instead take half damage.
