Convincing DM to use new books

I was wondering if there was any way to convince my DM to allow our group to use the PHB 2, or any new book for that amnner. Because for once in my entire time of playing DnD we actually have a player who is willing to buy new books. Now, his reasoning for not using any new books is because he automatically assumes all new books are overpowered and will not allow any of them, aside from the old 3.0 splatbooks. Another reason he cites is that everyone would have to read the book in order for us to use it, and since my group has other things to do, and some of them can not even bother to read a PrC they want to take and make me read it to them, it would be too much. Another reason is just plain stuborness as he is set in his ways.

I suggested that we look over the book and choose what to allow, but then he said that this wont work as players would ask why they can use this but not that in the book. I would love to use the new material, and I was DM just a session or so ago, but he REALLY likes DMing, so I am letting him do it again.

And this is sort of related to this topic, but how can I also convince him, that if there is a rules dispute, which happens often now because one of our new players knows the rules very well, to save it for after the game instead of wasting game time and looking it up. He says he doesnt like it when he gets corrected by a "noobie" because it makes him look stupid and undermines his authority. He also has a bad "I'm always right complex" which I suspect is the main problem here.

Oh, I might as well tell you all here, and I think I have mentioned this before a long time ago, bue he is also my brother. This causes a lot of strain sometimes, especially when I am DMing because he can feel free to do things, such as when there is a rules dispute, as demanding the PHB to look up the correct rule and even physically taking it from me. Now naturally, this would not be a problem if he was not my brother, as even a friend would not act in such a way when there is a problem. This is why I dont like to have him as a player, and which is why I often play as I dont mind him as DM, despite the abovementioned points.

The only way to convince him is to run a game with the new rules. Once he sees it work, he might be more inclined to include into his own game.

HOWEVER, the DM always have final say. Even I don't use all of the new rules released by WotC and other d20 publishers. In fact, I once smacked one of my players for bringing a PC using a Complete Warrior samurai class in my campaign.

Hope your brother the GM is not as sadistic and violent as me. :] :] :]

It sounds like your brother may lack some confidence in his mastery of the rules. Adding new books and rules to the mix could compound the problem. Save the books for when you take over the DM reigns again.

Good luck!

True, I can understand this problem. *Sigh* I wish I was DM again. :(

Nightfall: I beat him up quite often. :)

Then do it harder :p Maybe it will knock some sense into him. :p

Well, after that one time I sort of knocked him out I decided to go easy on him. He is the one who bothers me first, so it is not my fault. :)

But on the book thing. I suppose you are all right, I will have to deal with it for now, and when I get to DM again I will see if I can get the group to accept new material. :)

Galeros, it is your duty to save your brother from ending up as one of these "Core Only" DMs!! Show him that material from others books can be fun and interesting!! Sure, some things are broken, but those things can be smacked down. Be sure to remind your brother that "BROKEN!!!" is the battle-cry of the inexperienced DM.

Best way to do this is present new material everytime you run. All too often noob DMs (or even experienced DMs with little real grasp of balance and game mechanics) freak out over trivial things, such as the fact that Warlocks can do thier schtick At Will...

Who knows, someday your brother may find the wisdom to thank you.
