Interesting Paladin Sword
I had a Paladin with an Interesting Sword.
The Sword was found in Dragon's Hoard. When drawn forth from the scabbard, holy light filled the air.
And then the Sword SPOKE.
Like many swords with a multitude of magical abilities, it seemed to have an ego, a sense of self-worth. In fact, the other members of the party seemed to think the sword was arrogant.
"Lo, the most perfect sword has been drawn again to vanquish evil. Never have I know defeat and never shall he who wields me. It is good that you are wielding me, for the rest of your company seem to lack something in their moral fibre. ...."
There was much groaning and whining from the other members of the party whenever I would go to draw the sword. The sword would groan and whine and plead if I ever went to sheath him.
In the early days of using the sword, I just told the DM what I rolled without knowing what the sword would do. The Dm would say, "oh, you rolled a 19, you cut the minotaur in half with a blow that cuts through his armor like a scythe through wheat!"
After talking to the Sword for a while, the Sword told me about his creator. The Sword was appearently created by an Ancient good Wizard demi-god (sort of like a Gandalf) who we were on a quest to find.
As time passed, the GM let me in on some of the abilities of the sword. It could detect enemies at a certain range (increasing a Paladins's detect evil range). It could talk in several languages. It had vast knowledge of history (was extremely old). It grew in power as I grew into my Paladin powers. It had all of the usual Holy Sword abilities.
The Swords mental stats were amongs the highest in the party (int, wis, chr). As I grew higher in level, I could use the sword's various bonuses instead of my own (i.e. wisdom bonus to increase my will save, spot, listen, ), int bonus (for knowledge checks), chr bonus (for divine grace, etc.).
