Has anyone played these? What are they like?

What are the settings like, and the systems?

Do they all require the CORE core book to play?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

3e HG, and 2e GK and JC require the core books to play, as I understand it (I've stuck with my earlier edition books rather than updating.) I purchased the core books, as well as the first few CORE Command books and wasn't very impressed. The d20 material in the core rules isn't very well done, and the Sil updates didn't strike me as all that necessary. If you're someone who is just getting in to DP9's products, or are planning on playing it in d20, I'd suggest buying the core books and latest editions, but otherwise stick with your previous editions.

The best way to learn about DP9 products is to visit the website www.dp9.com

Other than that I can say that they have several sttings for use with their Silhouette rule system including Heavy Gear, Jovian Chronicles, Tribe 8, Gear Krieg and Core Command. They are all very different. My favorite is Heavy Gear it's also the most well developed setting they have. It takes place a few thousand years in the future on a planet called Terra Nova. The default campaign usually centers around military scenarios although you can do almost anything you can think of. The name Heavy Gear reffers to the mech like vehicles used in warfare. As I mentioned before the setting is very well developed and includes a great storyline if you like that sort of thing. Of course its just as easy to ignore it.

As you probably know the game has come out with a new edition recently. It is the only edition to include rules for use with D20 Modern. I have not used them so I cannot comment on their quality. The Silhouette system is solid (if gritty) but very, very different from D20. If you want D20 then it's your only option but if you don't mind a new system then you might think about picking up a 2nd edition rule book since it includes the rules. The 3rd edition requires the purchase of SilCore if you want to use Silhouette.

I play the 2nd edition of Heavy Gear and love it. You can play either a role-playing game with the rules or a table top battle type game, or a mix of both.

I do know that DP9 (the creators) said that the 3rd edition would be compatable with the 2nd edition stuff. With that said, I'm pretty happy with the 2nd edition and that system. It's fantastic. If you don't care about moving to their new D20 version, I would suggest getting 2nd edition and finding it on ebay.

The detail, history, etc of HG is done very well. I'm currently running an adventure they made for the 2nd edition version called "The Paxton Gambit". It's probably one of the best put together adventures I have ever seen or run in my 25 plus years of gaming. Tons of role playing and high adventure. It's very detailed and takes a lot of work from the GM to run it, but it's well worth the work and reward of running/playing such a grand adventure!

Anyway...my 2 cents worth!

So, does anyone have an opinion or comment of the latest HG rulebook and how well it works with d20/d20 Modern? Forgive me, but I'm not interested in DP9's in-house rules systems (Silhouette/SiliCORE).

The Heavy Gear 3rd edition book is actually not a rulebook. It is mostly fluff, so you can perfectly take it as is and add d20 modern (or sci fi, or the one you prefer) rules on it.

It is dual-stated (with d20M), and the conversion guidelines for the stats are on dp9 web page. The different approach in the rules does show, so the conversion could still need some tweaking after you apply the rules. But the every character and NPC in the 3rd edition Heagy Gear is already dual stated.

My .02 cents.

(BTW, it is SilCore :) )

You'll definately encounter some problems, mainly because their rules are more concerned with making a conversion from SilCore to OGL (yes, it's OGL, not d20, so keep that in mind) rather than d20/OGL to their OGL variant. The fact that you'll have to recalculate all movement (they use metres) is another factor that will slow you down a bit. So, yes you can do conversions but it won't be seamless and it won't be quick unless you're willing to sacrifice consistency.
