Cornugon's Infernal Wounding ability needs clarification...

I know that an ability this powerful should have been better written, but please don't be this cruel to your players.

And how do you think the demons feel about this ability running rampant in the Bloodwar? One damaging hit from a Cornugon and a demon is a deader (noting the complete lack of cure spells and Heal skill among them). Talk about being cruel.

If you want to get to a really literal reading of the ability, any creature who has ever been subjected to this attack by a Cornugon can _never_ be healed of any wounds without the caster level check.

Well, it depends on how you read "a character damaged".

It can be read as "A character who is currently damaged" or "A character who has ever been damaged".

Under the first reading, once someone has been cured back to full hit points, they are no longer damaged, therefore they are not "a character damaged by a Cornugon".

Under the second, they are forever "a character damaged by a Cornugon".

Both are valid literal readings, but one seems more likely the intent :)

Re: Re: re

It would probably make Cornugons more feared than pit fiends. . . . A marilith or Balor might well survive an encounter with a pit fiend. However, it would appear that they won't survive an encounter with a Cornugon unless they kill it before it can hurt them.

Well, it gives a DM some good bargaining ideas for Planar Ally spells.

"Sure, I'll attack those Paladins for you... but I've got a whole bunch of buddies you have to cure first..."
