Where does one find out what GP cost in magic items character should have for there level. I just want to see if we really are light on our magic or not.
Thanks in advance.

DMG page 139 or so... there's a table how much money a char should have. A few pages earlier is the same page for NPCs.

You can see sig if you don't have your books.

Explicitely, there is no "# of magical items for level" guideline. If a character has the correct estimated value in gear for his level, he could have 1 big magic item or several smaller items.

Or follow the suggestions for equipping epic-level PCs (it works for non-epic PCs and NPCs too)...one item with a total value no greater than 25% of the total you should have for that level, and a few no more expensive than 10% of the total you should have for that level.

Or something like that. I'm at work right now, and don't have the ELH handy, but I know it goes something like that.

I've always used a 40%/20% split: all but one item must be worth nomore than 20% of your net worth; that one other item can be worth up to 40% of that value.

As a player, I always tended to want to sink my money into improvign the ONE weapon I tended to wield, along with armor/shield and 2-3 utility items. By the time you hit the higher levels (15th and up to Epic) ... my god. A 20th level character allowed to have only one item worth 190,000gp? So much for +10-pricd weapons! The rest of them have to be 76,000gp or less? So much for ANY fighter(20) wearing a +10-priced armor or shield ... not after buying their weapon!

Whereas at 40/20 instead, we're looking at 304,000gp for the "big item" -- enough to get a +10-priced weapon with a couple adds, maybe a special material too -- and half that, or 152,000gp for the other items -- enough for +10-priced armor/shield, again with some direct-GP adds andspecial material.
