Cosmology Part II

This is ignoring the fact that the Blood War proper, as a Planescape creation, should perhaps stay in Planescape -- with the Great Wheel as it was.

Heh. I wish it would.

Even in Planescape, for which it was best suited, I find the Blood War only barely tolerable. I desperately do not want to see it appear in any other setting/cosmology.

Putting the Blood War in the new cosmology seems somewhat of a stretch to me. In the Great Wheel, because of the alignment-based symmetry, it was understandable how demons and devils came into conflict: they both want to own the intervening lower planes between the Hells and the Abyss.

In the new cosmology, the two seem quite cosmologically distant. As such, an ongoing, eternal war between the two just seems a little stretched. Why would the devils bother fighting the demons when there are lots of closer astral dominions that require much less plane-shifting magic to attack?

To each their own, I suppose. :)

Oh, sure. I don't begrudge fans of the BW their fun. :) And even if I were given control of WotC tomorrow, I wouldn't take it out of a hypothetical Planescape setting book. I recognize how much a part of that setting it is.*

I just don't care for it personally. (But then, even though I liked a lot of PS, the setting's treatments of fiends in general left me pretty cold, so I guess that's no surprise.)

*(That's not to say I might not shake it up a little, given the opportunity. :] But I'd leave it mostly conceptually intact. ;))

One thing is funny, though...apparently, the new cosmology brings along a greater shift towards a law/chaos dichotomy again, and away from good/evil. Think about it...the Astral Sea harbors all the Astral Domains, along with the Nine Hells, while the Elemental Tempest has the great chaotic mishmash of elements and the Abyss in the middle. Sandwiched inbetween those two is the Prime. Somehow I'm getting this "Gods vs. Eternal Chaos" vibe here, with mortals as pawns and helpers in the middle. Sure, there's bound to be some chaotic gods in the Astral Sea as well, but I have the impression that most Chaos will be concentrated "below" the Prime, so to speak, and most of the order types "above".

I wouldn't be surprised if they brought Mystara back from the dead as a new 4E campaign setting, or at least cribbed a lot of inspiration from it. Somebody like Asmodeus would be a lawful (evil) immortal in the Sphere of..hmmm, Energy maybe...while Orcus and Demogorgon were already in there as immortals of Entropy. Funny...the whole cosmology would fit in there pretty easy. Looks like I might take a peek at any 4E MotP, when it comes out.
