A few things to consider
- Peasants didn't buy houses, they built them. Not well, but they built them.
- Families lived in the same house for generations. Once it is built/paid for, there's no need to worry.
- Not everyone owns their house - hence rent. Your average freeholder had to pay rent to the lord of the manor, and your average serf worked the land for no pay whatsoever, turning most of his crops over to the lord.
