[CotSQ] How did you handle the Chasm? [SPOILERS]

There's a tunnel in the area of the crypts guarded by a couple of drow and an undead spider - it slopes down to the "Upper Guardpost" which is really just a cave along the wall of chasm.

*smacks forehead*

Ah. Thanks.

Re: Very nasty chasm

Great, I run this part on Sunday and the thread shows up right after.... :p

My group did o.k. It is a mixed group, meaning children and adults. One of the adults we call "broken-character" because he can break any module. But I am "sort of" nice because kids are playing.

In the first session, one of the guards alerted the city by shouting down the chasm and then died. The group retreated to rest, and in the process had to finish up the "bebeliths / aranea rangers / hiding drow" portion of the cave/crypt section.

They've done o.k. (i.e., only one death--and that was at the very beginning). I decided that the city would retreat and organize some ambushes inside the city (as opposed to the web). So they got through the chasm (after some fun fighting). That's where we ended, we'll pick up next time as they enter the actual city. I think the fact that the city will be "empty" (at first) will un-nerve them more than anything else.

Unfortunately for them, the web team just arrived, along with the now undead spider that they killed a week before. (the clerics had found the corpse in the webbing and had enough time to make it into a wraith spider which they could now control).

That's the beauty of the bad guys being followers of a goddess of undeath. You kill something and don't clean up properly, it comes back.
And a big D'oh! to me. Great idea, Overkitty! This will definitely make the next session more interesting for the players.

Thanks. I feel bad for my players, though. I mean, did you see what a Huge Wraith Spider can do? Now slap Fiendish on top of that.... ICKY!

Damn conscience. I have all these really nifty evil ideas, but feel bad about using them.

This one was just too perfect to pass up, though.

Wasn't the fiendish spider Garguantuan size?

A Garguantuan fiendish wraith spider = OUCH.

Yup. my bad. I can't remember these things off then top of my head, apparently. Very icky indeed. I feel ashamed. But, at the same time, I don't. The dark side is winning. ^_^

James, if you're reading this, I told you NO! BAD JAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well... mister Gargantuan Fiendish Wraith Spider lasted 2 rounds once he started attacking. He did, however do 38 points on the smite bite plus those two negative levels. Took the Half-Gold Dragon/Half-Dwarf Barbarian Fighter from full hit points to -2hp in one attack.

Course, they ganged up on him with the cleric's gmw'd +5 sling bullets (beads of karma are too powerful in that player's hands).

In the big fight with the web team and the spider, one whapper died, the other was negative, and everyone but the rogue was low on hit points. When the mage (from the bazaar guardpost) finally fled.

3 hours for just one bloody combat. I'll tell you one thing, the bazaar is a graveyard. The players put a grim reaper on their map to symbolize the bazaar. From the oppostion, only the pack lizards and the outpost's spellguard made it through alive, but damaged (and yes, all three were damaged).

Very sick night. Well... the raiding party is going out tonight, for sure. Houses to torch, people to kill.

Well, they got to the chasm, and wow ...

They defeated the first set of sentries, who heard them and were ready for them.

They then went down the tunnel, held a light above the hole, and discuseed tactics, then lowered the invisible barbarian down on a rope (the rope wasn't invisible, and the spider's tremorsense gave them 6-8 rounds to prepare. But hey, they defeated them too - but one sentry, whilst being pelted with arrows, got away and climbed down.

Then they cast daylight on a stone, and carried it to the edge of the chasm. Didn't that get the attention of the spider in it's nest 60 ft away...

So, we finished the session last night on round 10 of the combat, the spider just fell into the chasm, dead, and the web team is coming up to meet them (50 ft away), they're pretty much out of spells, beat up, and the barbarian is now fatigued...
