Could anyone recommend some good 1st-level modules for 4th ed.?

Hello,

Can anyone recommend any good 4th ed. modules? I'm trying to find one to potentially use for a new campaign I'm running.

The only stipulations I have are:
  • Can't be the Scales of War Adventure Path: Myself and another player are players in another game that's running that.
  • Can't be Keep on the Shadowfell: have players who've already gone through that one.

I know there's some available ala Dungeon, but I'd like to hear feedback on any of those from those who've ran/played them.

I'd appreciate any recommendations you could provide.

My group has played through some of the Chaos Scar adventures in Dungeon Magazine, and they've been pretty good so far. Specifically, we've played Den of the Slavetakers and Stick in the Mud. Both were fun, but I do have one point of advice: If you run Stick in the Mud, switch out the Giant Frogs for something else. These guys have an at will swallow ability that stuns (save ends). That's crazy for a level 3 monster, and our DM scaled up the challenge so that we were facing three of them with four PCs. At least let the PC try to fight its way out of the frog if you do use it.

Also, I'm just starting a group into the War of the Burning Sky. I love a lot of the flavor and background, but the first session wasn't all that fun to play. I think that may be because I wasn't as prepared as I should have been, so I'm going to keep at it for a while longer to see how it goes. As a first impression, though, I wouldn't recommend it yet.

We are playing The Burning Sky Campaign .... And we just love it!!!

We are lvl 6 now, and it keeps getting better and better ... The background is great and the storyline keeps you all hooked up aall the way (at least for us is that way) Each time we feel that we understand what the hell is going on, we get a new piece of info that make us to have to rethink all over again ... Its awesome!

I'll second my support for HS1. It's a great module in that it offers a lot to explore and it's not too linear. If I ran it again, however, I would make more changes to the backstory as some of it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense once you think about it.

If you're OK with getting away from WotC modules, Goodman Games has a series of them that my players enjoyed quite a bit. We played the Punjar adventure path, with the Mists of Madness (I think it was a freebie from RPG day 2008(?) but it's only 2 bucks if you find it in a store) thrown in (because it was set at about the same part of the world, and they hadn't gotten quite enough xp to level for the second Punjar module yet).

They suffer a little bit from early 4E-itis in that some of the conversions aren't perfect, and I thought the maps were a little small - the rooms are tiny and there are a lot of critters in some places - but the writing is pretty darn good and the world is fun.

Thanks for all of the recommendations!

Are there any more recommendations for Dungeon modules? Any other 1st-level modules available free online other than the Chaos Scar ones that you would recommend?

I've prepared a list of all the Dungeon modules here:

Menace of the Icy Spire is ok, make sure your group isn't cold focused or they may struggle with it (Mine did). Other than that one though all 1st level adventures are Chaos Scar. Storm Tower's good (lvl 3) and shouldn't be too difficult to de-level to 1st. Tariff of Reklingham took a ton of editing for me to play it for my group, but it's not great as written.
