Great. We've systematized the Mercer Effect.I'd love to see what Matt and Co could come up with system-wise, especially from the viewpoint of a game optimized for Actual Play shows.

Yeah, the only reason I know he said it is because I watched the first few minutes in the last few days. It's on their YouTube channel, in the one-shots. It's from way back when they were early days at G&S.Same, but I'm not a freelancer. The GM did good NPC's but he didn't know the system well at all. They were still making basic "what do I roll" kinds of mistakes in the last episode. I also felt that Undeadwood downplayed the system (SW) instead of promoting it.
@overgeeked I probably saw that earlier stream but didn't remember Matt saying that. I firmly believe that Deadlands or Noir would be a killer campaign for them.
"OK, who's going to roleplay out our ads at the top of tonight's session? Remember, there are mechanical bonuses involved for anyone who does. Not you, Sam; you do it every week."I'd love to see what Matt and Co could come up with system-wise, especially from the viewpoint of a game optimized for Actual Play shows.
Here’s to hoping. So the subject line of the email about tonight's episode reads... It's about to get LEGENDARY
If in the opening tonight, they welcome everyone to Critical Roll, where a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors sit around and play Legendary Adventures, a new gaming system from Critical Roll, I will lose my mind![]()
Based on the newsletter, I would suspect that this is about the imminent launch Vox Machina season 2.So the subject line of the email about tonight's episode reads... It's about to get LEGENDARY
Yeah I think that trust has disappeared recently. The current situation is much more favorable in my opinion. Both Critical Role and WOTC are riding upon each other to create a synergistic explosion of creativity and cooperation, such that there is more freedom given to third party content creators. As consumers, we stand to benefit a great deal from an ongoing and trusting partnership between Critical Role and WOTC.
See having watched all of campaign one, and a bit of the other campaigns where they are not struggling nearly so much with mechanics I would say the biggest barrier to entry for them in leveraging their brand to launch a new game is not any business concern but simply that they have all gained a hard won familiarity with 5e D&D, and won't really want to have to go through putting on a show playing an unfamiliar system again (and yes they do one-shots with unfamiliar systems all the time, but that's a different, "we're just doing are best" vibe than "this is our system that we created, are endorsing, or are the most prominent practitioners of" would be).Based on the newsletter, I would suspect that this is about the imminent launch Vox Machina season 2.
I would still be interested what a system they come up with themselves looks like (I have only watched season 1, but based on how often people forgot about even relatively basic stuff, I feel they would benefit from a system with simpler combat rules than D&D).

I wouldn't be surprised if they jumped ship rather than convert to 5.5 though.
Many fans won’t care, but I think the principals like Matt Mercer will care.I would be VERY surprised.
The show has a close relationship with D&D Beyond, they mention it most episodes.
Forgetting that, Critical Role, unlike others, clearly actually HAVE a special license with WoTC. Their published world is essentially official as is the adventure published for it. And their content has bled into OTHER official WoTC content (I know it bled into Avernus, for example).
Further, I suspect the great majority of their fans couldn't care less about the current OGL controversy (sure, there are some, but not the for the most part) so I doubt that's a factor.
Could it happen? Sure, But it will likely be MUCH later, if ever.
Some of it has. On the other hand, their most recent source book, Tal'Dorei revisited, is published under the OGL.I would be VERY surprised.

CR has a custom agreement with WotC, so OGL 1.1 won't apply to them. They'll need to decide if staying with WotC will hurt their brand, and if so, I imagine Darrington Press will join Paizo's ORC hoard. Some of it has. But books are not Hasbro's focus, anyway. IP is. And I don't think Critical Role wants anything to do with the clause in OGL 1.1 that could potentially give Hasbro control over IP like CR's characters, who are definitely D&D derived.
They're currently doing a "someone is trying to kill all the gods" arc, and the gods are the last bit of official D&D product identity in Exandria.I would be VERY surprised.

You know who definitely cares? Brennan Lee Mulligan. I will be very interested to hear if he has any public comments at some point. He's already now DMing a new non-D&D podcast that's apparently intended to run years. Announced in late December/early January, which suggests that he knew about the OGL 1.1 fiasco at that point, via Dimension20.Many fans won’t care, but I think the principals like Matt Mercer will care.
Other than not bothering to explain spell slots for Pike (because, ugh, who wants to watch that?), everything in the first season looked spot-on to me, down to the lightning-breathing blue dragon. That's right. If you look at Vox Machina on Amazon they very deliberately stripped any remotely obvious 5e (or even D&D) ties. The inspiration is 100% there, but none of the language, names, even spellcasting methods. They want their IP to be their own.
I mean I probably overstated the likelihood. Really all I was getting at is that if they were going to drop D&D at any point in the near-ish future it will probably be when the launch of OneD&D pressures them to switch rule sets anyway, because there's both business considerations and considerations about needing to perform while grasping with a new game.I would be VERY surprised.
