Pathfinder 1E Could Pathfinder take D&D's place...

You've said that three times now, but that's still not how it works.

Most people don't dislike things by the fans, for the fans, no.

I think you are reading way too much into these joke posts!

To clarify, WotC organized play is doing just fine; D&D Encounters is quite popular and is going into its sixth season, and a new organized play program called Lair Assault is starting this coming month. It's a bit disingenuous to make it appear as though WotC is abandoning organized play. They moved LFR out of house, but they've replaced it with other programs. Just in case anyone was confused by the way Azmyth worded it.

I'm surprised it took you this long to come to WOTC's defense.

Dannager.......protector of all that is Wizards of the Coast!!!!!!!

It's not doing fine here Dannager. Our nights are packed to capacity and there's crickets congregating on theirs...
Are you really trying to classify D&D Encounters as an Organized play program, like PFS, LFR, LGH, etc?! It's not even close.

The only confusion here, is your assumption that my statements are blankets covering all parts of the country. Sadly, they do not. This is representative of my region alone...

Far from it.

It's easy enough to tell that you weren't being entirely serious. But simply taking jabs at people is not humor in and of itself. In other words, if it was meant to be funny, it fell flat.

Those are many of the new programs that fall under Organized Play. You can't dismiss it because it has been a wildly popular set of programs for WotC. Also, be careful not to fall into the fallacy of assuming that because X is not popular in your FLGS, that Y must be true.

Luckily for me, both Pathfinder and D&D seem to be healthy and active in the DC area. What more could I ask for? :)

Yeah, wasn't what's-her-face (Miz "I'm not a gamer, and I'm proud of it") in charge when AD&D came out?

If you are referring to Lorraine Williams, then no. She was in charge during the "setting glut" era of 2E (not to mention the CCG and Dragin Dice debacles) that led to D&D's near extinction. AD&D came about under Gygax while 3E came about under Dancey -- like them as personalities or not, no one can argue that they were not passionate about D&D.

Now, I am personally a little concerned about Paizo. Rules glut is a problem that has plagued every edition of the game and both Ultimate Magic and Ultimate Combat strike me as rules glut. Plus, there's the issue of incremental redesign (the Stealth issue) which also concerns me. Pathfinder is plenty complex -- just about right, by many accounts -- but there's a tipping point for many folks. I have reached mine for rules already: neither UM nor UC will see my table, and probably not the Advanced Race guide, either. Personally, I'm very curious about the Beginner Box and it's "simplifications" and see how they impact play.

However, I would classify Encounters as something different from what constitutes 'Organized Play' in the sense of Living City or the Pathfinder Society. Trying to trumpet it as such was a poor choice.

I am not saying that Encounters is a 'bad thing', except on a personal level - to me it looked more like a brief demo of a wargame than an actual RPG experience. It might have been fun, but for me it would be unsatisfying. There was no connection between the encounters, and the one person attempting roleplay was told that he was slowing things down. Yay. Fun. :hmm: *

In the words of the immortal bard Ebeneezer Scrooge: Bah, humbug.

The Auld Grump

*EDIT* I am more than willing to admit that the lone session of Encounters that I have witnessed was a bad example, but it is the one I have. Remember Boys & Girls, your demo can act as an ambassador... do not get your embassy kicked out of the store.
