I think there's a noticeable segment of RPers who don't come back to D&D.

Which is irrelevant to the Skaff effect. It isn't those RPGers who are important... it is the people they interact with.

By staying in the RPG community, they keep alive the "roleplaying is worth doing" idea. That eventually leads to more people joining the RPG community, and they will probably play D&D at some point. Or the people they meet will.
