Counter-intuitive monsters

Most monsters stretch believability - but it is all about the context in which they are introduced. . . Hell, I used a flail snail with the fire template in my last campaign! It was one of several interdimensional twisted abberations that were coming through the torn veils between the planes.

On an unrelated note, my current vile plot involves the creation of a flail snail miniature. More on that shortly.

You would prefer that a human could walk up to an elephant (a huge animal, two sizes above medium), wrap his arms around it, and somehow win the fight?
Hey, just because I don't know how he'd win, and you don't know how he'd win, doesn't mean that he wouldn't know how to win.
Sure, he'd need to be able to reliably beat a +26 grapple check but that's easy past level 16 and possible much earlier.

All I'm saying is that if a character is good enough then he should be able to succeed, no matter what the challenge. The grappling rule doesn't allow that, at all.

I re-read Fear and saw that if someone is under the effects of Fear they are totally hosed in a grapple and the Barbed Devil can Power Attack the bejeesus out of them. If I even run one I'll keep it in mind!
I'm not too sure if this is counter-intuitive but enough already with the boar-like and ram like charging creatures. Razorback, Dire Boar, Fhorge, and on and on and on. Enough already!

Has anyone else noticed chimera aren't immune to their own breath weapons, or even resistant?

Ghosts who wield ghost touch weapons are generally more effective, but can be disarmed. You could wield the ghostly weapon, but if anyone moves the original with the body, the ghostly weapon vanishes. You could rig an interesting trap that way.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you mean by "moves the original with the body". Could you explain it?

Not an ordinary first level commoner--an elite array PC...or Eric Noah. ;)

There's some plant with DR

-Bludgeoning.

Why not fire?

Because Fire isn't an applicable type for Damage Reduction. You could give it a weakness against fire (150% damage, or whathaveyou), but having DR 10/Fire doesn't fly.

A friend of mine pointed out that even though a Fire Giant is Immune to Fire, it can still drown in enough magma. Wierd.
