Counter tumble variant question

In S&F p.69 it states a variant about tumble: Counter tumble.
Actually it's just a PC tumble vs NPC/monster tumble if available. What I want to know is what's happening when you have to pass through 3 monsters and you fail the tumble in the second monster? Does the PC stops the tumble in front of the second monster? Is he on the ground or on his feet? This could be very dangerous, right?
