Coup de grace... A moral stand point...

Well, I play by the rules, and that is the rule. It doesn't give tremendous amounts of XP. If the party faces the same enemy in several different stages, in a new fight each time, then I'm gonna give them XP for the battles they win, and forcing the enemy to retreat is a win. Try reading the PH and the DMG, you can learn a lot about the game that way.

Well when I read the DMG I've learned that the DM has to make most of the calls in such situations and that the rules in the DMG are not the end-all be-all. A properly played villan can escape a party several times during a campaign until luck catches up with him. I just don't think it's right to give exp for the same villan after every encounter in which he flees. Seems kind of cheesy to my but YOMV.

For Paladins, no, I don't think they would slay a helpless creature unless it were a fiend or other horrible monster.

I pretty much agree with this statement, but lets say the Paladin's allies (who are Chaotic Good) were to do this infront of the Paladin. The Paladin's intentions are to turn these bad guys into the town guard, but the Chaotic Good people CDG the unconcious foes for whatever reason. How do you think the Paladin should react in such situations?

Maybe, but both the PH AND the DMG state clearly, word for word, that you get XP for forcing the enemy to retreat. Some things may not be set in stone, but this one IS a core rule. Only Rule 0 can override it.

Since this is the Rules Forum, we're talking about the actual rule. The PH and the DMG are quite clear on the actual rule, whether you wanna RUle 0 it or not.

not it is not evil to cdg a monster that was previously trying to kill you. Not doing so is what is known as being stupid.. you know the stupid good guy who doesnt finish off the baddie so he pops back up. What you do is dependent on your alignment prospective.... if you stick to that what you do is neither good nor evil but of your alignment. it is not even under lawful good tennants that one would heal a dying enemy unless he served a specific purpose.

If I rounded a corner and there were four bears, when they swiped at me the paw would slice through a cloud that comically looked just like me as I would have probably ran the second I realized there were 4 bears infront of me :/

Now, a coup de grace has got you all upset, what about breakin knees?

Like, the bears are there
psion stuns em
Dwarf pulls out his hammer, Cleric pulls out his Mace, Fighter pulls out his sledge hammer and they all break a few knee's. Is this wrong? You're not killing them but it's no picnic either.

IMC,

It depends on the situation. Who are these bugbears? Are the merely random creatures? In that case, for all the party knows they could just be minding their own business, not bothering anybody. In this case, Couping them merely so you don't have to deal with them when it would be jsut as easy to leave them be would be evil.

Also, where is the group? If you are within the king's domain, killing them when capture and trial would be just as easy, if more of a bother, is a chaotic act. Still trouble for a paladin.

If however, the Bugbears have been raiding and pillaging the innocents, not only is it acceptable for the paladin to kill them, but it is his sacred duty to do so.

Everything depends on context.
