Court of the Bramble Queen

First Post
For all the complaining I do about the magazines, at least this is a good article.

The fluff is really nice and the Wood Bride template - though it can also be a wood groom - is pretty solid. It gives some good ideas about the Bramble Queen and also has a stat block for her. This is definitely a solo made by the author of Tomb of Horrors, because I can see it is another solo with a standard action that lets it make 3-4 attacks. Unfortunately, for a level 27 solo she lacks an effective mechanism for dealing with stun and dominate (though her saves against charm are a whopping +10! This sadly relies on any of these conditions being save ends, which they won't be by this level). This is very simple to solve by making her minor action teleport with another plant creature power simply take no action - ideally this would be a triggered action when she has a condition on her at the start of her turn - and maybe change it to a 4+ recharge or so. This would give her good resistance to all conditions in fact and be very appropriate for a level 27 solo. Plus it enforcers her fluff of her "using" her allies for her own means. The transferring of all conditions to the new monsters means they aren't entirely wasted either, so would be a solid mechanic for an epic solo.

This means the battle becomes less about the PCs trying to alpha strike her down ASAP and instead having to engage her allies more. As it is, the PCs can trivially stun/dominate her then just whack her to death with the absurd damage they do by this point. I honestly think authors should not be afraid to make solos difficult to effect with powers at this level, even if the assumption is they will have allies of their own. Overall though it's a good solid article and very very pleasing to finally see something with some good fluff and crunch in Dungeon.

So tempted to resubscribe if the Bark at the Moon adventure proves to be good, but I am so afraid that next month will be a return to garbage dungeon tile delves and more heroic chaos scar side adventures I have three billion of already. So conflicted.

Edit: In fact it could be kept at 6+ and the recharge roll made automatic when stunned or dominated. This would have the exact same effect and enable her to get her turns only when her allies are around. Patient PCs that exploit how this works and take out the allies first are rewarded. This seems completely appropriate that with her allies up she's hard as a rock to do anything to, but once her allies fall she is exposed and immensely vulnerable. Most importantly it gives her 3-4 rounds to actually do something in the combat and make a tense finish!

Edit2: Can't believe I didn't catch this first up, but she's missing a power from her stat block called retreating vine (it's referenced just next to her movement modes in the stat block, but isn't anywhere in the power list).

I didn't look into her stats, just want to make known, I like this article a lot! Really, I was hoping to have one or two of the Divinity/Court/... articles a month. This and good adventures is what I want the magazines for.

I really like the stat block as well and it's only a simple change to make her a very effective high level solo; which do have some major mechanical considerations to overcome. The article is wonderful and definitely something we need more of in Dungeon in every single manner. An excellent, well written potential antagonist and she has a great (if slightly flawed) statblock. If there had been a couple extra plant monsters or something I would have called it perfect - especially if they were epic plant monsters. But what is in there is truly great.

I felt it was a solid article, though I think it suffered a bit in comparison to the Prince of Frost (who, to be fair, had a longer article with more content.) The big thing I felt this one was lacking was some solid twists - I expect more from Archfey than simply an angry, spiteful, one-dimensional villain. Some story hooks or legends on ways to redeem her, or possible reasons or suggestions on why PCs might have to work with her of how they can bargain with her if they find themselves in her realm at lower levels, etc... that sort of thing would really have made this article perfect for me.

That said, I do like seeing WotC starting to put articles like this back in the magazine, and definitely would like to see more of them.

I think some rumours or story possibilities about the current location of her lover and what it might do if he's discovered would have been a good thing to include in the article.

Didn't have a chance to read the article yet, but definitely excited from what I'm hearing. Epic content in particular has been sorely lacking, so even if she needs a bit of work, its still a good thing.

As for the dungeon tile adventures, I'll say that I don't mind them in general. It does make good sense from a marketing standpoint. However, I also agree that its nice to see some adventures that go beyond the tiles. Let the author's (and thus the DMs) flex their creativity a little bit once in a while.

While this doesn't necessarily mean a true permanent change in direction, I am getting hopeful after the Lord of the White Field last month, Bramble Queen this month and (hopefully) Bark at the Moon later this month. Will be nice to have some good solid content again.

Yeah, I wrote this a while back, before I'd really gotten a grip on the newer solo techniques. But adding a save against certain conditions certainly wouldn't be a bad thing to do.

It would have been nice to have had a little more word count to play with, but... *shrug* It is what it is. ;)

I'll give the same feedback I gave Paizo when they started the demononican articles: we need lower level allies in the articles, to build up to the bbeg.

No, we really don't because all of her allies suggested in the article have plenty of ink to paper across several books.

For heroic/early paragon fey and plant type critters there are:
Nymphs
Several Dryads
Eladrin
Hags (Upper Heroic, easily deleveled into mid heroic)
Oblivion Moss (Plant Monster - really appropriate for her as well)
Shambling Mound
Treants
Quicklings
Scarcrows (Murderous Fey Constructs that kill mortals? Why thank you for the perfect fit from just the other month in Dungeon)

As a short list.

Now when you're actually facing her at epic her allies are.... Um... Formorians with some levels? Making your own dryads (as a level 5 dryad does not level up to 26/27 nicely)? Templating anything you can think of with the Wood Bride? But basically you'd need to make these monsters from scratch.

Yeah, there is very little of her own level. This is partly because epic is devoid largely of creatures beyond demons - but there are plenty of heroic monsters. Just thinking about it, I could easily run a campaign based around her from levels 1-10 without much of an issue. By mid paragon I'm struggling and by epic tier I'm basically making 90% of my monsters to support this campaign. So some epic tier allies would have been really nice, because as it is you're going to have to make most of them. Unfortunately if the author isn't given much of a word count, it's difficult to include all the really good background material + several additional statblocks.

4E really has the opposite problem. Lots of heroic monsters and then we run out of ideas the higher level we get.

I disagree, I want new monsters related specifically to her, but your opinion is also valid. It's an opinion, a matter of taste, not a matter of right and wrong. I should have made that more clear in my first post.
