Cover other games?--- Err No

I'm all for adding/expanding ENWorld to include the RPG industry as a whole, but it does come down to how it is executed. Keep the games distinct and it makes for a focused board. Nobody wants to load down the mostly D&D boards with games they never get involved in or have heard of before.

The list of messageboards will have to be condensed to a frame along the side. I want to see the entire "menu" of boards and not have to work hard by scrolling down to see my selection.

I suppose I would think of it as a layout of a large assembly building. Do keep the general assembly hall where everybody can mingle, but then give them their own sections where it's only their game, and then further divide if needed by subcategories as interest demands it.

Since this is the web, I'm sure there's plenty of room. But rather than put the whole burden on Morrus, or photocopy the ENboards to other games, I think it's important to grow into any expansion gradually and patiently so as to identify any problems easily.

It might not hurt to have an individual "champion" the board for each game. Someone who is willing to oversee their particular messageboards, rather than further tax Morrus and the current moderators also.

I like the format and linking that the people at http://www.planetquake.com use on their many boards, though it might not translate as easily to the ENworld's focus of messageboards.

As a side note, I'd like to see ENworld host articles based on some of their better threads. Don't just archive the good stuff--I'd like to see it condensed into a well written article and presented in a way to make it easily available to all future members. It would reduce certain often asked questions about the games that always seem to come up, but that experienced players and DM's seem to take for granted.

That would be a negatory, good sir....

Morrus,

I must place my vote as a no for expanding the site to incorporate non d20 products. I have several reasons behind my vote. The first is the number of non d20 products. I am constantly blown away by the number of RPG systems out there, however, I have no wanted to play them. I tried white wolf a few years ago and realized that I did not want to make the time or pay the money to learn a whole new system. It is a big investment. Also, I just don't like the other systems out there. Why learn 50 systems when one will do?

I detest RPG.net. The site is slow (even with a cable connection). The people are unfriendly. Isn't is great that all those "matured" gamers love to bash DnD. They have moved on from such concerns. Ie. They are snobs and bigots and I do not like that type. I would hate to see EnWorld become like that. I would stop visiting the site in that case.

I like the d20 system. I do not want to wade through all the other news etc for systems that I will never use. I love the fact that d20/DnD players have a place to go on the net and I have not yet found another place that can satisfy the experience of this one.

I think it would be a bad idea to expand the site. I know that I would stop my daily visits to the site because I really do not like the atmosphere of "general" RPG sites. There are a lot of them out there, but only one EnWorld style site.

Well honestly I wouldn't mind at all as long as the d20 stuff was still covered in the same depth it is today. Because it's nice to have a central site for my gaming news and experience, but hey I'm sure I'm in the minority with my opinion. Ah well. :)

My vision for the future of ENworld.

I would like to see ENworld (or some news site that is tapped into the heart of the gaming community) expand into other games as well as into other concepts regarding roleplaying.

My vision for the future of gaming is that roleplaying expands far, far, far beyond entertainment or Learn-how-to-upsell games at corporate sales meetings. Through Better World Roleplaying, Inc., part of my task will be to expand the gaming industry with and without the OGL into markets thus far untouchable by RPGs, yet many of these new games will have a common rules link to the D&D I love so much. (However, mostly through use of the SRD as complying with the d20 stl will be hard for us to do and undesirable, but I digress).

So, I am highly motivated to encourage ENworld to expand its scope, however, not just into other game systems. I would like to see someone sponsoring articles on roleplaying that really push the envelope. (h'mmm... ENvelope, get it? "Pushing the ENvelope: How d20 Left the Basement" :D) For example, one day I'd like to see articles written by a psychologist who used an RPGs to reach a difficult client, or a Sales Manager who designed a d20 module that helped his team learn how to increase sales 90% in three months. That kind of thing. I would support such a site in whatever ways I could. I'd love to have a platform to write articles such as those, however, thus far there isn't one (other than my website that gets vsited by about 20 people a week). ENworld could be the CNN of the gaming community!

An expansion of EN World's coverage beyond D20 will transform this place into a clone of RPG Net. There should be only one RPG Net.

I don't agree in the slightest. Whatever the subject matter, EN World and RPG.net are two very different sites in terms of apporach, moderation, resources and so on.

I have nothing against RPG.net, but I have no intention of running anything other than EN World. That would absolutely be a top priority. I love my site, and would never allow it to change in that manner.

Why Not Try It Out?

A quick suggestion: You could always do a little "test" with the forums. Currently, there isn't a good area in the forum for non-d20 discussion (I don't think there is any forum actually). You could add a link on the main forum page that points to a page with a bunch of other forums. For example, on the main messageboard page, have a link to "Non-D20 games", and the following page has a "General" forum and perhaps a specific forum for the more popular RPGs out there.

Just a thought.
