Cover to Dragon #310 [wow!]

I tend to like Elmore's models, but I have an issue with the lack of realism in armor.
Heh. There's that word again, "realism."

Granted, the female fighter's armor does show some skin, but I'm not going to chide Elmore or any fantasy artist for lack of "realism."

If the magazine is about real-world historical arms and armor, then that would be an entirely different story. ;)

Agreed. We're playing a little fantasy game called Dungeons and Dragons, not a historical simulation called Realism and Recreationists, people. A certain amount of artistic license is acceptable. Yeah it ain't realistic - so what? Neither is Boris Vallejo's work, and it's well known even outside gaming circles. As long as it looks nice and provides a spark of inspiration, who cares what they wear?

One of the consistent side-effects of any Elmore piece I see is that it immediately takes me away and starts me thinking of what interesting adventures his subjects must be a part of, and how I could recreate them for my own players. That ain't a bad thing for art to do to you!

Are there any other online stores that carry the new Dragon?

Thanks,

Nick

FRP games has the newest issue of Dragon with the DM Screen. Having purchased from them and other online sites, I highly recommend FRP games if you are looking for something.

I thought the exact same thing.

Anyway, I dig Elmore's style for the most part, but I hate scantily clad fantasy females.

Nick

make that 3 of us who thought that...

When I retrieve it from the mailbox a week or so ago, I said out loud, "That's Jackie from That 70s show!" I don't think any one was around when it happened :)

I could do more Brom -- he's still around here and there (did the Ghostwalk cover) but not as much as I'd like. I'd like more Matt Wilson, but he may be busy doing Privateer Press stuff. I like the artist who did a lot of the interior art in this month's Dragon -- what was his name again?

Ya they should definately get Brom to do some colors. Lets just say that if you like that cover, Brom shoudl do a succubis or something, or just use one of the female pictures from the book, hey nipples are back after all (for those of you that have seen a lot of Brom's work)

Elmore is a great artist. He has done a lot of work that includes things besides scantily dressed women. Dragons and landscapes by Elmore make fantasy worlds come alive for me. I much prefer the work that he has done which includes more action, like a chase scene, or when there is some suspense and drama involved. This particular picture is really just a posed, static picture of two girls.

The new 3rd edition artists have been unmemorable. Lockwood is the only one I can name, but he only makes me think of PHB character illustrations, not images of fantasy worlds.

I agree that there are issues of believability when it comes to armor that doesn't cover vital body parts. But scantily clad, beautiful women always make for good sales. It's called sex. And marketers love it. As long as it doesn't become the dominant focus of every Dragon Magazine cover, I have no problems with it. Using beautiful women to sell magazines happens all the time. I don't expect Dragon to be so politically correct that they won't allow the occassional suit of Elmore-style plate mail.

Compared to any Cosmopolitan magazine cover, which is available at every supermarket checkout line in America, I have no problem with Elmore's take on painting female figures. It's still fantasy to me.

With that in mind, I also have no problems with equal treatment of males. Conan would look pretty cool on the cover too, but I'll bet a standing pose would be pretty boring. We need some action. A fight, the suspense of an ancient ruined temple gate, or SOMETHING that summons suspense. In that regard, I think this cover has room for improvement.

The Dragon covers since 3rd edition have been nothing but bland portraits, and this cover is a good change.

Am I the only one who thinksthat most of WAR's art just plain stinks?? I love Elmore, Sam Wood, and Lockwood though.

You are most certainly not alone. I hate his work with a passion. It's overly stylized comicbook crap with essentially no texture, and a very dry palette. [That sounds pretty harsh, I know. I mean no offense to Wayne, himself. He's very talented for the style that he does. I happen to not like that style . . . just like people like different styles of music. That's all.]

Elmore is the Man. Lockwood is great (when he's not doing dungeonpunk). Sam Wood is good, too (when he's not doing full-on dungeonpunk).

Overall I think this is one of Larry's better pieces, but its still more of the same. I personally am surprised how long he has lasted considering his skills. Elmore's talent lies in drawing landscape and background. His figures always seem static and uninspired and he doesn't have alot of technical skill when it comes to living beings. He may win nostalgia points from some, but I am a firm believer in judging an artist by his merits, and that leads me to say that larry elmore is more than just a few paces from the front of the artistic pack. Todd Lockwood is consistently good, Sam Wodd has many good pieces, Wayne Reynolds occasionally does wonderful work and consistently does above average pieces, but overall Elmore is quite far behind in technical ability in comparison. You guys can argue style all day, but technical merit isn't really based on taste.
