That's a heck of a confusing situation, which is why it's only a variant.

Think of it like this. Your aim wasn't spot on because you wanted to hit the rider, not the horse, and wound up swinging too high, missing both.

But that's not the variant. I do not use the variant, so I agree you miss both.

"When your horse would be hit in combat" is the phrase so yes it could. Unless because the DM says "the hit was going for you, and the horses is accidently hit" (now I don't THINK that my DM would do this). That would bump up the AC greatly for my PC. But then, I do not want my (usually multiple) foes to target my horse to wipe the smarmy :) of my PC's face. ;)


As for the wind: inside all day, can't even SEE outside unless I wander somewhere else. :(
