I didn't mean open content to non-open content--only open to open. I was thinking of the mutation sections of d20 Future stuff I've seen elsewhere. I'll dig up examples. I often confuse d20 Apoc (not open yet) and d20 Future (mostly open).

Am I the only one who finds the notion of being fearful of getting burnt on a $3 product a bit odd?

I've seen people raise a huge screaming stink about a $2 donation to a podcast when the podcast didn't come out the day they wanted it to. Demanding their money back, writing nasty emails to people, writing nasty posts on messageboards, all the while claiming the moral high ground as a "supporter" who should get special treatment.

So, no, I'm never surprised by anything that includes money, no matter how small it is. Some people will pay 3$ for a cafe latte, decide they don't like it and toss it in the trash as they leave Starbucks. Some people will go absolutely bonkers over 2$ donated to a podcast. Sometimes ... same person. Just depends on what hits their button.

Not saying any posters fall into any of those camps ... just saying that when you bring money into something, all bets are off.

I'd be worried about a feat collection in particular. The work involved in creating a feat collection is negligible if you are simply using someone else's feats.

OK so you have to do data entry, big deal. The WORK involved in creating a feat is more about the thought that goes into the creation of the feat and less about the actual writing.

So if you are simply re-writing a feat collection based on someone else's hard work, then yeah, that pretty much sucks.

I'll admit to reprinting feats. Alien Invasion's feats are out of the MSRD.

Why were they reprinted?

Because they were particularly relevant to the project. It was easier than reinventing the wheel and better than making people look them up in resources they may or may not have.

Personally, I think that's the real spirit of the open gaming license; being able to use existing content in a project without having to recreate similar material which just floods the market with redundant material.

Considering the amount of original material in Alien Invasion, the reprinting of a few feats is pretty forgivable. Hell, considering what the particular feats are, it made perfect sense to include them in the book.

Psion, it may be just $3, but it's not just money. It's a vote. By spending money on a product, I am telling the producer of said product that it is a financially viable product at least once. Even if I am the only one to do so, it is still a vote; it is still a badge of consent that the publisher can use to say "some one will buy this."

If Covert Ops is a rip of feats from other sources without any original content, then I do not want to tell the publisher that such a product is worth my dollar to purchase. If it is not such a product, then I will likely vote with my dollar to show my approval of such a product. I do not vote uninformed; thus, I do not make uninformed purchases. It wouldn't matter if the price were a penny; paying for a product sends a message.

Mind you, I'm also a guy who looks into the ethical practices of the businesses he shops at; I check the tags of the clothing I buy to make sure they are produced locally or in first-world nations. I vote with my dollar every time I spend a dollar. My RPG purchases are no different.

I'm thinking about ordering this product from the EnWorld store but I can't find any reviews on it. I know its still new but I don't want to buy it if all I get out of it is a few feats I already have in other books.

Anyone else purchased it yet? Getting any use out if it?

Given this guy's history of liberally using other people's stuff without giving any due credit, including in a few cases stuff that wasn't covered by the OGL, answer is most likely yes.

Really?!?!?! It is amazing that you know about why I was taken off, even though you were not involved in ANYTHING that went on. And since I know you did such important research of hearing BOTH sides of what went on, plus knowing when went on BEHIND the scenes that were not in the "public eye". I am sure you did all that research before speaking out on something that you know NOTHING about. Do yourself a favor, actually know what the hell you are talking about before opening you mouth and making a lot of assumptions.
