CR of this Encounter

Including a bonus for basically breaking the backbone of the city, I think lvl 14 chars got like 16,900, lvl 13 got 20,000, and the one lvl 12 (the druid, who died) got something like 24,000. I was a little miffed overall, since my dwarven cleric started the palace at 15th level, and now (thanks to 2 deaths, one each time we went in) he is just below 15th. But my arcane archer went from 14th to needing 200 more xp for 16th... so that's cool.

okay, maybe i don't understand CRs all that great, but the entire situation seems beyond messed up. first, congrats for the victory, but with a CR that high (20+) it should have been a lot closer to a TPK. can anyone out there break this (xp awarded) down into something believable?

Well, the xp was divided 7 ways. I figure the king and his illithid cleric probably accounted for 1/2 that (CR 20 and 19 respectively). The rest, like I said, it's a converted 2e module, so there is probably some arbitrary amount of xp the party gets for finally destroying the city. Knowing 2e, it was probably like 75,000 per character. Our DM just houserule'd it to some smaller amount for 3.5.

As for the TPK... apparently the king suffers from some racial insanity that makes him less than lucid when attacking in combat. So the party was able to keep his attacks on one tank while the other tank got healed. The clerics both died because they had to get inside his reach (10' due to Righteous Might, which we never managed to dispel) to heal the tanks, and then took a full attack. The druid died when he turned into a dire bear and attacked the king, who promptly turned around and owned him. The arcane archer and the sorc never got within 30' of the king, so they came out fine. Our ranger/fighter/horiz walker had a cloak that cast [/i]stoneskin[/i] on him, so he could take a few hits, and the dwarven defender.... well, he had over 200 hp while stanced, so he could go a few.
