Craft question

From the srd:

To determine how much time and money it takes to make an item, follow these steps.

Find the item’s price. Put the price in silver pieces (1 gp = 10 sp).
Find the DC from the table below.
Pay one-third of the item’s price for the cost of raw materials.
Make an appropriate Craft check representing one week’s work. If the check succeeds, multiply your check result by the DC. If the result × the DC equals the price of the item in sp, then you have completed the item. (If the result × the DC equals double or triple the price of the item in silver pieces, then you’ve completed the task in one-half or one-third of the time. Other multiples of the DC reduce the time in the same manner.) If the result × the DC doesn’t equal the price, then it represents the progress you’ve made this week. Record the result and make a new Craft check for the next week. Each week, you make more progress until your total reaches the price of the item in silver pieces.

So.... how long does it take: until your craft check x DC equals price of the materials or the market price of the item?

Depends on the roll.

Let's say you're trying to make an Iron Pot DC 10, for you're craft check you roll a 15. Multiplying the DC by the Check you get the sp worth of crafting for the week.....

10 x 15 = 150sp

The cost of an iron pot is 5 sp, so in this case you make it in 1/30th of a week.

For a alchemists fire, you've got a dc 20, with a roll of 20 you get 400sp of work done in one week.

20 x 20 = 400sp

cost of an alchemists fire is 20gp (or 200sp) so it takes half a week.

Hope this helps.....

Since Shape D. only answered your question in a round-about way...

It says "If the result × the DC equals the price of the item in sp, then you have completed the item." It doesn't say anything about how much you had to pay, just the price, so you go with the market price in silver.

Yep I missed this part....

I guess I answered the part of the question he already knew the answer to.......

But yes, Market price.

Nuts. That means my PC's "Q" cohort is going to take three times as long to make this item for the PC: 78 days for an alchemical "make-up" kit rather than 26. Drat!

Check my math?

For an NPC with Craft: Alchemy +15, taking 10 on her checks for a roll of 25, to make one dose of each:

Blend Cream: 500 sp market price, Craft 20. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500. Construction cost: 166.7 sp, Time spent: 7 days
Catstink: 500 sp market price, Craft 20. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 166.7 sp, Time spent: 7 days
Fareye Oil: 250 sp market price, Craft 20. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 83.3 sp, Time spent: 3.5 days
Freeglide: 200 sp market price, Craft 20. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 66.7 sp, Time spent: 2.8 days
Healer's Balm: 100 sp market price, Craft 20. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 33.3 sp, Time spent: 1.4 days
Keen-ear Powder: 200 sp market price, Craft 20. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 66.6 sp, Time spent: 2.8 days
Lockslip Grease: 500 sp market price, Craft 20. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 166.7 sp, Time spent: 7 days
Nature's Draught: 500 sp market price, Craft 25. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 166.7 sp, Time spent: 7 days
Softfoot: 500 sp market price, Craft 20. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 166.7 sp, Time spent: 7 days
Suregrip: 200 sp market price, Craft 20. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 66.6 sp, Time spent: 2.8 days
Antitoxin: 500 sp market price, Craft 25. Check: 25. Check x Roll=500 Construction cost: 166.7 sp, Time spent: 7 days

Total materials cost: 126 gp, 6 sp, 7 cp.
Total time: 55.3 days

The time to make Suregrip, Freeglide, Healer's Balm, and Keen-ear Powder is what has me guessing.

The amount of time it takes is based on the market price.

The cost you pay is the raw materials price (or 1/3 the item's price {as in market price}

By the way there are couple of sentences contained in the PHB that are not contained in the SRD that might help explain this some.

specifically.

"That is why the item's price and the Craft DC are used to determine how long it takes to make the item and the cost of the raw materials."
