Craft rules make no sense at all

Last night, the PC's decided to have a pair of Adamantine Daggers forged. After consulting the Craft rules, we figured out that it would take the Smiths 26 weeks to make one dagger! We all agreed that it made sense especially when you consider that Adamantine is really hard to work.

As for the 26 weeks to make plate mail, plate mail is one of the most difficult suits of armor to forge, it makes sense that it would take a long time. The adding a +!0 to the check makes sense as well. Initially, I was confused by it, but after my players explained it to me, it made perfect sense. But maybe that was just me.

Uhmm... how do you get to 26 weeks for one adamantine dagger??

A simple dagger is 2gp, DC 12 to craft. Masterwork adds 300 gp, DC 20. Adamantine adds 3000 gp, which includes the price of the MW component.

If you assume the cost of the adamantine adds to the creation time, you'd be crafting 2702 gp at a DC of 12, and a 300 gp MW component at a DC of 20. If you do the "voluntarily add 10 to DC" bit, you would need a skill check of around 50  to come up with 26 weeks of crafting.

If you assume the adamantine cost does not add to crafting time, then assuming a skill check of 20 it would only take you 7.5 weeks at most to craft the dagger.

I don't have the PHB right in front of me but doesn't the Fabricate spell mention something about appropriate Craft checks for making items requiring a decent amount of skill?

Wizard, a +5 intelligence bonus seems reasonable (by then), he'd only need 5 ranks and he takes 10 to craft any armor or weapon.

You spend 10 skill points to be the best smith ever.
