Creating a character with 21 levels

That's one of the reasons why I question the ECL's of most templates. Some may disagree. Other thoughts?

Although templates that give a good Con bonus do pay for themselves hit-point-wise in the long run.

You'll note I was rooting for the Half-Cel Paladin.

Heck yeah... I'll go for a friggin' half-celestial commoner.

My DM gave my character the half-celestial template for a month as a story item, and it sold me on the exceptional use of this template. IMO, however, the wings ought to add +1 ECL. It's just that good, and would still make this template worth the cost.

Hacing seen in action games where someone has more ECL-add than actual HD ... it sucks.

My advice is, whatever you do -- make sure you have at LEAST half as many hit dice (round up) as the final ECL. In your case, that would mean 11HD.

Good point about HD. I was worried about the low (9) HD for the mind flayer, but I figured that since he's ethereal, he'll be okay in most encounters. Of course, if we fight a ton of ethereal bad guys he'll be toast.

A straight-up half orc barbarian is pretty strong, what with the DR 6 /- and all. Or a 20th level monk. But the way I see it, how often do you get a chance to play a monster?

My new idea is a young gold dragon (size Large) with Leadership; the cohort will be a beefy high level Paladin/cleric with a lance and the Mounted Combat/Charge feats. Mounted Combat negates hits to the dragon, and Charge gives double damage. Plus, the cohort effectively increases the melee damage. Not bad, not bad.

FYI, here are the other characters:

Pixie rogue
Human wizard
Ghaele (an ECL 20 celestial)
Djinn Fighter
Stone Giant barbarian
Monk (not sure what race)
