Creating bases for minis

Anybody have any clues on how to make snow for mini bases?

I also see a lot of rock formations on bases, they usually look very similar to each other even though different people painted them Is there a generic technique or are people buying premade bases?

For snow, here is how I do it:

Take mini base (before mini is on it, of course), and coat it in rubber cement, or some other form of glue. Then dip it in sand (Just plain dirt doesn't work as well... sand is the optimal choice). After its dry, clean away the slot for the mini with a toothpick or exacto knife. Give it an undercoat of a light grey/light blue mixture, let that dry. Then paint it with a non-gloss white (I prefer "skull white", myself.

As for stones... I actualy use little tiny bits of gravel, so I'm not really in a position to comment :)

I also use gravel for rocks on the bases, but some of the minis I see have bases that are supposed to be all rock, such as the mini standing on a mountain.

Thanks for the snow idea, I will try that.

For all rock surfaces, I use kneedtite... the infamous "green stuff"... I mix up a bit, stick it to the base, then use toothpicks and my fingers and such to make it look like a bit of rock... then I paint it with a mid-range grey, detail it in other shades of grey, then give it a wash of a very watery black to fill in the cracks.

Another thing you can do for snow, btw... I havn't been able to find the paint in a while, so I developed the white-on-blue sand trick... but there is a paint out there, it's meant for I think fabric, if IIRC... It's actualy made specificly for snow; it has little tiny granules of a glitter stuff mixed into it, so that it even sparkles like new-fallen snow.

I wish I could find that paint... I used to get it at a fabric - n - craft store, but it went out of buisness a few years back :(
