Creating magic items - broken

Those costs are guidelines for magic item creation. They get the DM to the ballpark to set the price. If an item seems cheap for the price those guidelines come out to, then yes, the item is too cheap, raise the price!

Those are not G.U.R.P.S. character creation rules.
Very true... personally, I found the Magic Item Creation modifiers from Arcana Evolved quite helpful... through them, I've some additional guidelines for Magic Item Creation:

Base Spell XXXXXXXXXModifier
1 round duration XXXiXXXx3
Short duration XXXXXXXXx2
Personal range XXXXXiiXXx1.5
8th+ level XXXXXXXXXXXx1.5

Yep; too much of one - boots of Expedious Retreat, guidelines, work out to 4k... while boots of Striding and Sprining cost 5.5k, and only grant +10 feet of movement and +5 to jump checks.

Which works out to an effective +9 (or even +11 if your normal speed is 20 or less) on Jump checks; I find a lot of people forget that the increased speed improves your Jump result completely apart from the explicit bonus granted by the Boots.

Hi,

Thanks for input everyone.

I feel the a Ring of shield (4000gp) is very similar to a animated shield (16000gp)
The trade off is Ring of Shield take a body slot and protects you from magic missiles, whilst
the animated shield doesnt use a body slot. The question is does protection from magic missile equate to not using a body slot. The animated shield also has a armour check penalty, but that can probably be overcome if you use a darkwood shield.

So maybe the Ring of Shield should be worth at least 16000. But then again a Ring of Protection +4 is worth 32000 and provides less benefit to some classes.

Cheers

That's not even a maybe, it's a clear definitely. Yes, a ring of Shield should be worth at least 16,000, because that's the cost for a +4 shield bonus to AC (which, BTW, is the reason why it's not 32,000 like the deflection bonus from the ring of protection, because it's 'only' a shield bonus (easier to negate)).

It then should cost a little more due to the Magic Missile protection. ~19,000 is probably fair.

You always have to look at the effect not just at the spell level. Only spells which have no effect that can be clearly assigned a cost, you should use the spell level formulas!
