Creating Magic Items Question

First Post
What is the cost adjustment for an item used once a week or once every so many days (such as the Figurine of Wonderous Power)?

All I could find is if something had charges per day.

Market Price / (5 * number of days)

So if we wanted an item that worked once a week, divide the market price by 35.

And as far as I know, it's not official, or in the DMG. It just makes sense to me...

I don't know that might be to cheap. A use activated Wish 1/week would cost 8,743gp

Some spells are okay for casting oncea week, so I think it would depend on the spell.

Well, any spell with an XP cost should not be allowed in an item that functions a potentially unlimited number of times over the items lifetime. That's a bit of common sense for anyone interested :) .

Good point. Okay, then 8,743gp for Gate once a week. I'd be more then happy to take that for that price.

How about an Endurance spell extended 7 times so it's a 9th level spell. It'll almost last 5 days. Sure, one dispel, but it's worth the risk.

DMs should be very, very careful about giving discounts for having less than one use per day. It is a loophole that makes for cheap reusable items that can be abused. Let me give you an example:

Everlasting Scroll of Invisibility [Wondrous Item, use activated] Invisibility spell at caster level 3. One use per 16 days. Cost = 2 x 3 x 2000 x (1/5 x 1/16) = 150 gp.

Scroll of Invisibility [Scribe Scroll] Invisibility spell at caster level 3. One use spell completion item. Cost = 2 x 3 x 25 = 150 gp.

Do you see what I mean?

That's true for all non-standard magic items: "Be careful." Even some standard ones require care. I was only suggesting a "guideline formula", we all know those can easily be broken and the DM has the job of ruling what is in/out of his game.

That, or let the item's USER take the XP hit. ;)

I was suggesting that your formula, which happens to be in the DMG, is often too generous in price with respect to the question originally asked by the topic starter.

In my experience a once a week items is not one seventh as valuable as a once per day item. That is because most magic items aren't useful every day, or only apply to some combat situations.
