There was a recent thread about salaries in RPG creative positions, kicked off by none less than Sean K. Reynolds sharing salary information. No, there isn't really better pay out there in the field, and at least WotC has benefits as well.
Like many professions, you probably have to own it yourself to make the big money.

When there is a history of instability, people often move not to make an upgrade to their position, but to maintain themselves laterally before they lose their job and have to settle for a downgrade. I'm not saying that is necessarily happening here, but it does happen. You often see it when an entity seems to be heading towards releasing personnel, or in cities where a large employer is about to release personnel that will flood the labor market with good candidates (making movement after that point much harder - move now or be stuck for 5 years).

It would be very funny if he's been poached by Hasbro for their Transformers/G.I. Joe RPG efforts.

Hasbro has effectively hired a shop to do it. A liaison and person to handle story coordination might well be called for.
That's just how licensing works, they have approval. BY the same logic then Disney is doing Star Wars. If you're being paid for something you didn't hire them, they asked permission and as a condition you told them they have to go through an approval process.
