Creativity of gamers vs. non-gamers

While I haven't played with more than 20 people maybe, I have had my share of many types of gamers. What I have seen, however, is that those who were not creative (or who thought that putting effort into being creative was a waste of time) left the gaming group after some years.

While my current gaming group is not big, each and everyone of them is creative and do DM. I did my share of clones, but when I understood that my original characters were more fun, I stopped.

For the math thing, I wasn't that bad at math in school, but D&D helped me get fast and efficient with basic maths.

Where this discussion started (in the What's it like for a gamer girl thread) the discussion centered around both creativity and intelligence. Math does have something to do with that.

Only a very small something. There are lots of highly intelligent people who are lousy at math. There are people who are great at higher methematics, but have problems with doing long-division quickly. Math skills are only a small corner of overall intelligence.

I think I agree with JD that gamers, in general, aren't much different from the rest of the population in terms of intelligence and/or creativity. I might, however, concede that DMs are generally more creative than the rest of the general population. (Actually, in my admittedly skewed opinion based purely on anecdotal evidence, I'd be inclined to say that players - ie. those that don't DM regularly or at least semi-regularly - are more likely to be halfwits than more intelligent/creative...)

I would think that a game where you make believe you are someone you are not, doing things you are not, would REQUIRE a level of creativity above the norm. Otherwise you would pick a less imagination intensive hobby.

I've seen plenty of dumb gamers.

I've seen plenty of unimaginitive gamers.

I've seen plenty of gamers with no common sense.

Some of these I've gamed with over long periods.

My current gaming group is generally sensible smart and imaginitive, but they're also good friends, and I don't tend to hang out with dull, foolish clods gamers or not.
