Alhtough LA +8 is about right, I'm not sure that it warrants one.

A mastodon stands 10 feet high at the shoulder and weighs over 4,000 pounds. They are size Huge. Since this guy's only Large, maybe 8 feet tall and 3,000 pounds?

On second thought, its old entires say "as 9' tall elephant"...elephants are Huge. I know it's late in the game, but I think it could easily be Huge.

Support for this case:

From MM Elephant entry: "This entry describes an African elephant. Indian elephants are slightly smaller and weaker (Strength 28), but more readily trained (Wisdom 15). These statistics can also represent prehistoric creatures such as mammoths and mastodons."

From Wikipedia: "The Asian Elephant, sometimes known as the Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus) is one of the two or three living species of elephant. It is smaller than its African relatives, and the easiest way to distinguish the two is the smaller ears of the Asian Elephant. Asian elephants tend to grow to around two to four meters (7-12 feet) in height and 3,000-5,000 kilograms (6,500-11,000 pounds) in weight."

So, if a 7-12 foot tall indian elephant is Huge in D&D terms, methinks the baku should be as well. ;)

its 1E dimensions are the same as an Asian elephant's, if that helps. in the 1E MM, an Asian elephant was 9-ft tall, and an African elepahant was 11-ft tall.

I don't think so, but the increase to Huge will take their ECL over 20 (the reach will add +1 to the LA, pushing it to +9).
