I don't have the module with me, but I believe the Beast of Averoigne is a shapechanger that can take on a pseudoserpentine form.

I found this here: http://www.classichorrorstories.com/texts/beast.txt

"Passing among the ancient trees that towered thickly behind Perigon, he thought that he discerned a light from the windows, and was much cheered thereby. But, going on, he saw that the light was near at hand, beneath a lowering bough. It moved as with the flitting of a fen-fire, and was of changeable color, being pale as a corposant, or ruddy as new-spilled blood, or green as the poisonous distillation that surrounds the moon."

"Then, with terror ineffable, Gerome beheld the thing to which the light clung
like a hellish nimbus, moving as it moved, and revealing dimly the black
abomination of head and limbs that were not those of any creature wrought by God. The horror stood erect, rising to more than the height of a tall man; and it swayed like a great serpent, and its members undulated, bending like heated wax. The flat black head was thrust forward on a snakish neck. The eyes, small and lidless, glowing like coals from a wizard's brazier, were set low and near together in a noseless face above the serrate gleaming of such teeth as might belong to a giant bat."

"This much, and no more, Gerome saw, ere the thing went past him with its nimbus flaring from venomous green to a wrathful red. Of its actual shape, and the number of its limbs, he could form no just notion. Running and slithering rapidly, it disappeared among the antique oaks, and he saw the hellish light no more."

Except that some of the teasers sound a lot like "Eh, nobody will need that guy, anyway." Especially the alternates for the rilmani article. ;)

i cannot tell a lie, so i will say nothing at all. ;)

and thanks shade, i will include the link in the query.

i will have to send the proposal in tonight anyway - i need to send a signed copy of the disclosure form according to the guidelines, and for that i will need a scanner (like the one i have at home). ;)

would that it were so:

"A copy of our Standard Disclosure Form is included with these guidelines. You have our permission to make as many photocopies of this form as necessary. A completed form must accompany each proposal and manuscript that you submit. You can append it to the end of the submission in the case of hard copy submissions or include a scan of a signed and completed Standard Disclosure Form with your electronic
submission."

perhaps that's why they never got back to my on the bugbear pantheon thing. ;)

This is really misleading. No mention of disclosure forms under the Query section, but then...

"The Submission

After you have received a request to write an article, email the completed submission to dragon@paizo.com as a Word document or in rich text format. There are two important rules for your submission:

1. Always include your name, current email address, and home address on the first page of your article. If either address changes before you receive a response, send an email to dragon@paizo.com noting the address change and the article or articles to which the change is relevant so we can send a response to the appropriate place.

2. Always include a disclosure form. You’ll find the disclosure from attached to these guidelines. You can scan the form with your signature, mail a signed copy, or include it in the file at the end of the article."

This led me to believe it was only necessary for a submission, not a query. But now I'm not so sure.

I'm not sure how it would work stats-wise, but it should be able to somehow possess or transpose with a humanoid, like the priest in the story. Type should be Outsider, since it's some kind of fiend from beyond the stars.

i was thinking of it in terms of what the priest would be like when possessed... but filby, you're making me think that it would be better to stat the possessing force itself. more on that, i guess, when and if i get a response with an "OK" for castle amber. :) i e-mailed it to both the Dragon and Dungeon guys, just to be a bit more pushy with this. ;) i'll start a new thread after i get a response (though, depending on what it is, i may post here first).
