Those would be OK… but I think it would be more fun to work on something that you were personally familiar with, something you have played in or DMed with, rather than “these aren’t converted, let’s convert them!” but these are OK to use.

as for white plume mountain, we should also have a look at the original module to see what's in there. IIRC wasn't the kelpie in there? we can reconvert her as the "kelp woman" for example. ;)

Well, if we are going down that road, in my case I'd have the most fun and personal experience with the remaining yugoloths, demons, rilmani, and beholderkin. ;)

fair enough, which is why you suggested them first. :D

let me get my stuff together... in a little bit, i will post an opinion poll - let the people say which of these sounds like the best ideas. then, based on the results and our own personal preferences, we can start setting up the first of the queries to be sent.

just noticed this:

Actually, I think I'm going to send in some excerpts from my Slaadi Project, but, since it's been posted online, what should I do with it? Delete it from this site, or let it be?

well... this is something i've been thinking about too. even though Scott has given permission to just about use the CC entries verbatim, WotC policy will probably not allow that. i'd say the CC is pretty commonly used, and WotC needs to protect its own legal rights by not using the conversions on a copywritten website such as the CC. thus, at the very least, to use monsters that i myself have written nearly all the flavor text on, i will have to rewrite it from scratch to get it published.

however, yours is a different case. since it has only been posted on a messageboard, what is the legal concern? it is nowhere near as accessible to the general public, and the text here is not copywritten at all. but, like most companies, WotC would probably want to err on the side of discretion. here's my advice to you, and to anyone else who has posted something on the forums that they want to submit to a magazine.

either:
1. if your article is accepted, then rewrite the flavor text, and send in the article. don't change anything anywhere else, and all parties are protected.

2. do not mention that this has been posted before, and hope that WotC does not notice your posting. if your article is accepted, then send in the text as your originally wrote it, and delete all previous postings of it that you can find.

Ok, judging from the responses so far and my own personal preferences, the first 5 queries I send are going to be thusly:

Denizens of Castle Amber

Prehistoric Animals

Fey – the little people

The Remaining Rilmani

Masters of the Mind

But don’t despair! This is only the first step of what will probably be many. ;) as soon as this first query is set up (patience, please), one of you can volunteer to take on 5 additional themes, and we’ll help you set up those queries, and you can send it in yourself. You don’t have to limit yourself to the themes already suggested.

Now, what exactly is involved in setting up the queries? Really, nothing more than choosing which monsters to use. What I will do in this case, with each of these (except the rilmani one, that is a gimme), I will go to the general RPG forum, and post a thread, asking people to think of all the monsters they can think of that fit with that theme. Then, we will take it back here, and one by one, whittle each theme down to say 5-10 workable monsters, with alternates. I will also ask for people, at that point, to submit any original creations as they desire (except for the prehistoric animals theme), to add them to the mix. Then I (or someone else, when it is their turn) will write up an intro paragraph for each query, along with a sentence or two for each creature, and hit send on the e-mail button!

After that, someone else volunteers to take up the next set of queries, and onward until we run out of ideas or volunteers (you can go more than once, of course), or until we become busy writing the actual articles. :D

OK, let’s start building the queries. I’ll do the easiest one first, the Rilmani.

We have only three, left unconverted after the Fiend Folio:

Abiorach

Argenach

Plumach

basically, this one is settled already, unless someone can think of another area of the multiverse that needs some balancing that isn’t already covered by the existing rilmani. :)

if we don’t add a new rilmani or two or three, then we can just add some more flavor text about the rilmani race.
