Creature Catalog now in Dragon Magazine

Next I would choose the “Masters of the Mind” – aka, the illithid-related monsters.

We have a few – the ulitharid, urophion, and illithidae template from here: http://www.enworld.org/cc/converted/index.php (too lazy to repost the links!)

Plus, there are also the unconverted Gohlbrorn, Illithocyte, Voor Larva, and Pthisic from the Monstrous Arcana series.

And, I’m glad I posted this thread here, as there are a handful of ideas to include, as well as seeds to spark ideas for new monsters.

So, if you can add some more conversions, or concepts for new monsters, now would be the time. :)

(Ferret, your flayed worms might just work here… and I think I remember someone doing a brain golem conversion?)

More of this tomorrow, or later tonight!

The phthisic is in the Psionics Handbook.

I remember that the gohlbrorn was a kind of a miniature bulette, but what were the illithocyte and the voor larva? They sound interesting.

hmm, and so it is, with the neothelid. perhaps, if this article is chosen, there should be a note referring to them.

Rilmani:

One word: Archrilmani. ;)

Let's look at the roles covered by the existing rilmani:

Abiorach - agents on the elemental planes
Argenach - advisors and agitators, particularly on Material Plane
Aurumach - leaders, diplomats, strategists
Cuprilach - spies and assassins
Ferrumach - foot soldiers, cavalry
Plumach - common citizens, craftspeople, workers

This leaves many options open that I can see:

?mach - agents on the transitive planes (Astral, Ethereal, Shadow)
?mach - agents on the energy planes (Positive, Negative)
?mach - guardians of the pathways between planes (portals, planar breaches, the Rivers Styx and Oceanus, etc.)
?mach - preservers of the Balance in nature (druidic rilmani)
Half-rilmani
"Rilmanitouched"

Related Creatures:
Kuldurath (FF)

Masters of the Mind:

I converted the brain golem....but then the Fiend Folio trumped it. ;)

The draknor from Dungeon #24 is another one that fits the mold. I requested it the Dungeon thread for future conversion already. :)

Other existing 3E/3.5 illithid-related creatures of note:
Elder Brain (Underdark)
Illithid grafts (FF)
Larval flayer (Dragon #318)
Illithid symbionts (Dragon #308)
Voidmind creature template (MM3)
Alhoon (illithidlich)(MOF)
Quaggoth (MOF)

A few more non-converted illithid-related critters:

-Yaggol (Dragonlance/Spelljammer)
-Gith Pirates (Spelljammer)

they were from Dawn of the Overmind, and they are a bit “out there”. Illithocytes are tadpoles that evolved into a new species of squirming slug-things (4-HD). Voor larvae are skeletal insectoids that hunt illithids (12-HD)

The gohlbrorn first appeared, I think, in one of the Dragon Annuals (#1?). someone please check that one out if you can, as I think there was another creature or two in there related to illithids.

Sort of like the Chief Administrator? ;)

yeah, some workable ideas… anyone else have any opinions on these? Adding 1-3 new creatures should be about as many as we’d want to go with this one.

The very idea that rilmani might reproduce… mind boggling. :o what would it take to incite passion in these guys? ;)

Ah yes, there’s that…

I don’t have that issue, do you? what is it and what does it do?

Now, of course, we don’t have to mention every single monster related to the illithids – that could get kind of silly. ;) (unless we just decide to put a list in there) but it is a good thing to keep in mind, and mention them where appropriate.

Yaggol, maybe… I could put that in as an alternate. Someone please check to see if it has appeared in any 3E Dragonlance products. As for the pirates of gith – I don’t know, why would we use them?

As for homebrewed creatures, I posted links to my brainstealer dragon and the nerve swimmer swarm here, as well as stats for the mind worms. As they obviously are already posted, we cannot use them as is...

Found this:

"Annual #1/35: "The Dragon's Bestiary" (Keith Strohm): Introduces five new
monsters of the Underdark: gohlbrorn, lukhorn, varkha, chromatic mold, and
elghonn. Not specially geared towards the FORGOTTEN REALMS setting, but these monsters are quite likely to inhabit the Underdark of Faerun as well."

Indeed. He goes by many names: Sitter of the Cosmic Fence, The Mighty Meh, None of the Above, and so forth. ;)

I imagine they are very workmanlike, but being champions of Balance, they probably aren't selfish. ;)

BOZ said:

I do. It came from the same adventure that introduced the ulitharid. Essentially, it is a gargantuan aberration that is highly-intelligent, attacks six times per round, is immune to mind blast, and has a 5d12 heat ray. No wonder illithids fear it, eh? ;)

Of course not. I just figured it would be handy to have here as a reference point so we don't recreate a similar concept or if we want to briefly mention how a few of these relate to the creatures we do include. We could always list 'em in a sidebar, though.

The pirates of gith were another offshoot of the illithid-enslaved gith race. Plus, everyone loves the githanything. :)

Have to make a more BOZ-friendly link…
knight otu’s critters

don’t worry about the re-writing – if these guys are used, we can take care of that. :)

all of these reappeared in MC Annual #4, except the elghonn. What is that one all about, I can’t remember?

heh, cool. We can pitch this guy as an alternate – the tone of the article would be very different depending on whether or not we have a high-muckety much of nothing. ;) hey, we can call him Seinfeld!

depending on how things go, mention them in the article and/or in a sidebar. :)

I’ll give that some thought…

Anyone know if the Yaggol have appeared in any 3E Dragonlance books?
