Creature Collection III Open Call

I would kill three industry professionals of your choice to see neutral, animistic, matriarchal hyena-colored gnolls receive the blessed sanction of hardcover instead of dopey demon-worshipping patriarchal green-skinned fur-tards.

I realize that posting three times in a row on the same thread is a shooting offence. (Here's hoping Nights just awoken to save me).

I would by 2 copies of any book that:
Involves a matriarchal society in fantasy D&D which isn't filled with evil male hating psycho-bitches. Drow were cute but I'd like to branch out. (sorry eric's grand mom)
Is written by Mr. Skemp (I liked HF, sue me).
Involves gnolls in a new way.

So that's a lot of books (ok. so its not given S&S print runs, but I figured I'd post in a non-whiny way my enthusiasm for seeing something that pushes a few boundaries).

Huntsmen

Are your Dark Huntsmen based at all on the Black Cauldron?

I have been trying for some time to think of a good way to do Huntsman that wouldn't make them too complicated to actually use.

I based a Chaos Demon on the Huntsmen (From the Prydain chronicles by Lloyd Alexander for those not in the know) for an Amber campaign I ran a few years ago. It was v.v. cool, so I have incorporated them into my current campaign setting, which I run using 3rd Ed. Blatant theft, I know, but they really are excellent monsters (and they scare the crap out of the PC's)
I haven't done any stats for them as yet, because although the players have heard of them they have never travelled to the hunstmens' homelands. They will soon, however, so I will have to get off my behind and stat them.
If you like, Smetzger, I will send you my version.

Edit: It is Lloyd Alexander. Thank's Graf

Actually Ethan, I was kind of hoping to do for the gnolls what Chardun did for the dwarves and Calastians. Course I'd make them bloodlusting, plague carrying, drink the blood of their enemies Vangalites. But that's just me. ;)

The way I see it, we've already got manticora for that. And there's some part of me that openly rebels about lion-people and hyena-people being able to agree on just about anything. (Except "those other guys need to die, now.")

Graf: Wow! Thanks for the kind words, man. Maybe I'll try going after this open call myself after all.

Positive or negative I come on pretty strong I guess (though I tend toward the latter). It's the innovative stuff that makes SL so much fun. Looking forward to more top-flight stuff from you all.

Re: Huntsmen from the Alexander Lloyd books (I always thought it was Lloyd Alexander....).
They already exist and are stated in 3e, they were one of the first monsters ever to come out, before even the monster manual. They turned up in the web preview for the Creature collection as Ferals.

They did what they could to simplify it but the math is still a bear.

Re: Theocracies. Are these the theocracies of primarily the the gods already published (i.e. the 8) or are there new gods here?

Is there pantheonistic action going on? Like with gods of similar alignments ruling cities in tandem or more like contient full of Mithrils and Hedrads?

I imagine they are based on the existing 8 but perhaps they might also have a few for the demi-gods.

Mmm good point. And I don't think we need any for Belsameth. The harpies suit her just fine. Oh well. I can at least dream that some day, a gnollish empire will spring into being. I just hope it's on Termana. ;)

Okay, maybe "kill" is a bit strong. But damn, I love gnolls — just not the way anybody else does them.

(Except Reaper Miniatures. Their gnolls work just fine.

As a DM, you hardly need the 'blessing' of hardcover to do anything.

Not sure if you'd like my gnolls, but I kind-of based their culture off the Aiel from Wheel of Time, except that they favor heavy plate armors, two-handed heavy-damage weapons (or mighty composite longbows) and the fighter class. Strongly lawful neutral, worshipping the arts of war as a philosophy (per Deities and Demigods). Other than a few clerics and sorcerers, ever gnoll is a warrior, and a darned good one at that.

I'm really going to flesh them out for my new, upcoming campaign. Would you like to see some example NPCs from a previous campaign? Email me if you do.

SSS-Druid,

Forgive me for asking a stupid question, but the instructions state we should use [CCIII] in the subject line. Is that with or without the square brackets? In other words, should the subject line be

[CCIII]

or

CCIII

???

I just wanted to be sure. It wouldn't be funny if I submitted 3000 suggestions and they all got killfiled because I got the subject line wrong!

BTW I'm kidding about the number of suggestions. It's really ten times that number - I just didn't want to scare you. :p

Hello Krusty & S'mon!
Hope you're both well. ;)
