Creature Incarnations: Kobolds

Good stuff. I'mt thinking that kobolds are only this prevalent for awhile...I hope.

Had the MM been more like this (with the added fluff), I'd have been much happier with that product. I figured this is how we'd get fluff, though.

LOL.

Keep on the Shadowdfell has definitely taught us to take Kobolds seriously.

The best part of it to me is that the player has been my friend and fellow D&D player for the longest time, so he is rather jaded when it comes to goblins and kobolds as credible threats.

You know something funny? When running KOTS, the 2nd encounter ambush, they were having some trouble and one of the characters mentioned that on top of everything they hope the wyrmpriest doesnt explode when it dies or something.

I guess they're psychic

Am I the only one who thinks they're overdoing it with the kobolds? One of the DDXP adventures featured them, H1: Keep on the Shadowfell features them, the example adventure in the DMG features them, there are quite a few of them in the MM, and now there are even more of them on the website! Enough with the kobolds already!

Sigh ... they're obviously someone's pet monster over at WotC HQ.

Kobolds have been D&D's speedbump for a long time. They were a joke and an annoyance because not much else at 1st level would have been challenging without being dangerous to 4 hit point characters.

One reason for the emphasis on them and all these variations of kobolds is to show one of the strengths of 4ed. Its no more basic monsters with the same old same old stats and combat style. At first I was worried that without class levels from 3.x, that 4ed monsters would revert back to being boring but this has shown me its actually much better. As many posters have mentioned about the characters in their games... "They are only kobolds whats going on!?!" Its bringing some freshness and mystery back to the game.

As another poster mentioned, they seem to be spacing out the traditional monsters and increasing the level range that they are effective against players.
3.X had kobolds for 1st lvl and then orcs were CR2 :/ not much room there.

Lastily its good that they are focusing on kobolds because they are for starting characters and are intellegent enough to use tricks and abilities. I would much rather have them focus on low level intellegent opponents now than bring out lvl 25 animal opponents. We wont need them for months.

It's one of those quantum things. Found alone it's elite and more powerful to the PCs, but in the kobold tribe he loses his elite status and isn't more powerful than the Chieftain.

I could probably kick my CEO's behind if I wanted to... He's still my boss though.

If kobolds followed the same social systems that we do, then yes, I'd agree with you.

Yeah, but I don't really see Kobolds as following the just because I'm physically tougher that means I win philosophy either. The "big guy" just has more pressence...

Watch dogs in the park. It's not always the biggest toughest dog that becomes alpha. Sometimes it's the ratty little chiwawa that just makes a lot of noise and movement.

The article's cool. Don't be hatin' on the kobold-profusion. Multiple versions of classic monsters will always be more awesome than 50 different Shadar-kai Buttsniffers :)

LOL, ok that is bloody brilliant, I love this *evil grin*

hm, "Dragon Mountain", for 4th ed, eh? ;)

I can just see a a kobold standing atop a fallen hero, waggling it's bum at the party and squeaking "KISS IT!"
Buhaha!! :D
Totally agree. I've been inspired to dig out my copy of Dragon Mountain and run it again...
