Creatures that polymorph into humanoid form

the Jester

Legend
In mythology a lot of shapechanging things go around disguised as humans. Do you ever do this in your campaign? Do things like some dragons, avolakia, etc. go around looking human- only to spring their true appearance as a surprise when combat breaks out?

Oh Yeah....I used to use it alot but since I have been gaming with the same group so long they started to catch on ... one to many Pit fiends mascarading as damsels in distress I suppose...

I definitely use this tactic in my campaign. And they don't even have to disguise themselves as humanoids. For example, a devil polymorphed into a troll against a group of experienced adventurers is a nasty proposition, since they're likely to waste their efforts on fire-based attacks, which it is immune to. As LGodamus' post indicates, such tactics are best when used sparingly.

thats true of ALL tactics, you have to keep 'um guessing;)

Dumb question. Wouldn't a devil polymorphed into a troll lose its fire immunity? I thought that polymorph meant that you lost your own supernatural powers...

[does checking]

Oh, poop. You keep your extraordinary abilities, of which Fire immunity is one. D'oh me.

And here I've been having devils NOT polymorph very often for just this reason.

Right. All immunities are retained. So, for something like a dragon, are things like frightful presence, spell resistance, blindsight, and keen senses. You have to know your rules when you're shafting your players :D
